Tottenham Get Go-Ahead For New White Hart Lane Stadium Development

Council committee will vote on recommendation on September 30

Tottenham Hotspur’s £400 million plan to redevelop White Hart Lane has been given a huge boost after being recommended for approval by planning officials, Goal.com UK can reveal.

It is understood that the crucial report, which will be made public on Haringey Council’s website tomorrow, has given the green light to the scheme after all outstanding issues were resolved.

As revealed by Goal.com UK last week, councillors will vote on the recommendation at the next meeting of the Council’s planning committee on September 30.

If they grant their approval for the development, which includes a 56,250-seat stadium, a 150-bedroom hotel, 200 homes and a supermarket, it will not be the end of the planning process.

The final say will be left to the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson. He must make his decision within two weeks of the September 30 meeting.

Spurs will now feel confident that one of the most significant hurdles in the planning process has been cleared.

The Premier League club have encountered a series of setbacks with their application since presenting their original proposal to planning officers 11 months ago.

After alleviating the concerns raised by conservationists, the revised plan still needed to be amended because of transport issues relating to the building of the supermarket that is crucial to the funding of the project.

“The outstanding issue was the supermarket and the impact on the local transport network,” a source close to the Tottenham application told Goal.com UK. “The final transport study came in from Spurs on Friday and all concerns have now been resolved.”

It is believed that Spurs have an agreement with Sainsbury’s for the supermarket giant to build an 11,000 square metre megastore on the 20-acre Northumberland Park site.

The supermarket, which insiders say will be the biggest in the borough of Haringey, forms Phase 1 of the development and work could now begin on the scheme later this year while Spurs raise the finance for building the ground.

Sources say the supermarket is likely to be open within 18 months and then Tottenham can begin work on the stadium, which is Phase 2 of the development.

Given this timescale, the club’s hopes of having the new ‘silver ring’ stadium ready by the 2013-14 season seem ambitious.

Spurs’ proposal is to build a new stadium to the north of the current site. Two-thirds of the new structure will be built around the current ground while matches continue, before games switch to a pitch in the new, unfinished stadium as work is completed.

The club believe they have outgrown their current home, which can hold only 36,214 fans. They have another 23,000 on the waiting list for season tickets.

The problem is the Stadium will probably be sponsored and in that case the Sponsor will want naming rights.

Thats why all the computer mock-ups of the new stadium have 'naming rights' posted all over the roof etc. Be a shame if it's not named after Sir Bill but this is the corparate age and it's unlikely to happen unless we get a fan as a sponser and their happy to incorparate it.. Be nice to see 'Rainham Steel' as I always remeber their advertising hoarding at The Lane and plenty of other grounds as well lol . . . . .

I am sure there will be plenty at the new Stadium to remind us of the great man. I think it will just be known as The Lane.

Tottenham's new stadium plans were approved by Haringey Council's planning committee on Thursday night.

In what Haringey Council say will be "an overhaul of north Tottenham", the Premier League club will redevelop White Hart Lane in a £400million project. The new stadium will have a capacity of more than 56,000.

Council leader Claire Kober said: "The Spurs development has the potential to make a huge impact, not just on the success of the football club, but also on the whole of Tottenham - delivering job opportunities, regenerating the area, and boosting the local economy."

She added: "We're proud of Spurs' rich history in Haringey and excited that the club has committed its future to the area.

"We look forward to seeing the development unfold and are confident that it will deliver fantastic improvements to this part of the borough."

A statement from the council said: "The plans will now be referred to English Heritage, the Mayor of London and the Secretary of State for a final decision."

Seems like Levy isn't putting all his eggs in one basket tho'. Still sniffing around the Olympic Stadium. Do they think Boris Johnston is a goner maybe ? Copy & pasted below part of a report on the BBC website . . . . .

Tottenham have registered an interest in taking over the London 2012 Olympic Stadium, the club has announced.
Spurs join fellow Premier League side West Ham in submitting a formal interest in the 80,000-seater stadium.
"It is only prudent and good management that we ensure that we investigate all possible options for the club," said Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.
Spurs also had planning permission for a new stadium in north London approved by Haringey Council on Thursday.
The official deadline for submitting bids to take over the Olympic Stadium after the 2012 Games passed on Thursday
"I can confirm we have registered an interest in the Olympic Stadium site within the deadline of September 30, in conjunction with AEG [Europe], the world's largest entertainment and facilities management company," revealed Levy.
"We were informed by the Olympic Park Legacy Company that were we not to register an interest at this time, there would not be an opportunity at any future date.
"We have always maintained that we wouldn't undertake any project that could undermine the overall financial stability and future success of the club and this shall remain our guiding principle going forward and in determining our best option in the interests of the club and all its fans and stakeholders."
Levy was delighted at the news that the club's application for planning permission for a new stadium - called the Northumberland Development Project - was approved.
"I should stress that there is still much work to be done. We shall continue to work with Haringey Council and the application will now be considered by the Mayor of London and referred to the Secretary of State.
"We shall keep everyone connected with the club updated over the coming months as discussions continue with the various public sector bodies," he added.
