Chelsea are considering making another attempt to sign Croatian and Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric when the transfer window reopens in January.

Chelsea who lost 3 – 5 to Arsenal yesterday made several attempts to sign Modric over the summer, but manager Andre Villas-Boas is set to make a renewed effort to sign the Croatian playmaker in January.

The news that Chelsea will once again be courting their star player will be disconcerting to Tottenham fans.

Villas-Boas is likely to make an offer nearing the British record transfer fee Chelsea themselves paid Liverpool for Fernando Torres back in January, to force Tottenham’s arm and relent on their resolve to keep Modric at White Hart Lane.

Only two weeks ago Harry Redknapp the Tottenham manager said that Modric would have been sold in the summer if he had become a disruptive influence as a result of the speculation concerning his future.

Well it now seems that come January, Redknapp and Tottenham could have an anxious 30 days to see if the latest interest from Chelsea turns the 26 year old’s head.

According to reports, free spending Russian side Anzhi Makhachkla are considering making an audacious bid for Spurs’s Welsh international Gareth Bale when the transfer window opens in January.

Owned by Russian Billionaire Suleyman Kerimov and boasting a star studded squad including Roberto Carlos and Samuel Eto’o, Anzhi certainly have the financial might to make an offer to tempt Spurs to enter into negotiations concerning the sale of Bale.

However, it is doubtful Bale would swap the bright lights of London, to ply his trade in Russia. But Anzhi would be able to offer a financial package for the left back come winger which Bale may find hard to turn down.

Roman Pavlyuchenko and Heurelho Gomes to lead Spurs January exodus

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has said that he is looking for a 'good offer' for striker Roman Pavlyuchenko, who is set to be among a number of players - including goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes - to leave the club in January.

Pavlyuchenko, 29, has made it clear he would like to leave White Hart Lane soon as he has not been getting enough first team action.

However, it seems Redknapp wants to make sure he gets the right price for the player.

'I suppose it's possible [Pavlyuchenko will leave] if he feels it will hamper his chances of playing in Euro 2012,' the Spurs boss said.

'But it would take a good offer for us to sell him because he is a good player.'

Another big name set to depart in January is Brazilian stopper Gomes, who has struggled for first-team opportunities this season.

The arrival of Brad Friedel in the summer pushed Gomes down the pecking order, while Carlo Cudicini has been preferred as the veteran's understudy.

And Gomes has confirmed he is actively looking to leave, saying: 'I will probably go back to Brazil on loan for half a year.

'I'll then come back to Europe to join another club.'

Pavlyuchenko recently questioned whether Redknapp is telling the truth when he says he wants him to remain at Tottenham and made his own feelings about a move clear.

'The main part of my contract with Tottenham ends in the summer. Afterwards, the club has an option to extend it for one more season, regardless of my wishes,' he told Russian newspaper Sports Express.

'I don't know whether the club will execute that option, but a good offer would definitely be considered.

'I don't know my market value right now.'

A number of London clubs are said to be interested in signing Pavlyuchenko, including Fulham and QPR, although Gomes is thought to be attracting attention from the continent rather than any Premier League clubs.

Spurs keeper to quit London for Brazil

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes has revealed he’s heading home to Brazil.

Gomes is fed up with a place on the bench behind Brad Friedel and will quit Spurs after Christmas.

Gomes, who joined Spurs in a £7.8 million move from PSV Eindhoven three years ago, said: “The club bought Brad as second keeper behind me but the manager Harry Redknapp chose Friedel as his No1 goalkeeper.

“It is very likely that I will leave London this coming winter. I will go back to Brazil on a loan deal, so I can come back to another club in Europe after that.’’

Gomes has been reduced to occasional appearances in the Europa League this season, while Redknapp has preferred veteran Friedel for his club’s Premier League campaign.
