Harry Redkapps comments were Scandalous. A Spurs fan speaks. Empty Harry Redkapps comments were Scandalous. A Spurs fan speaks.

Post by BazSpur Wed Jun 06 2012, 23:17

    by Jack Howes

Yesterday Harry Redknapp had one of his usual interviews with Sky
Sports News. He does these chummy interviews with Talksport or Sky
Sports News more than almost any other manager and this willingness to
chat to the media has undoubtedly helped him personally become popular
with the journalists and pundits who monopolise the coverage of football
    in the UK.

Fans are often irritated by his habit of blabbing about transfer
targets when it would be better to keep quiet. But yesterday his
comments were less about transfers and more about his own personal
contract situation, and the timing and tone of his comments were
    scandalous.

The comments I as a lifelong Spurs fan had most trouble with were “You
don’t let players run into the last year of their contract if you think
they are any good and you don’t let managers run into the last year of
their contract if you think they are any good. That is the situation so
it is up to the club.”

Now these comments are bad enough. A highly paid employee using the
press to implore his own chairman to give him a new contract is
unacceptable. That stuff should be kept in-house and should not be aired
publicly. Talking in the press about such things breeds uncertainty in
the players, in the fans and doesn’t create a positive atmosphere around
the club. Contract negotiations being dealt with in the newspapers is
no way to run a football club.

What makes these comments so poorly timed is the fact that Daniel
Levy, chairman of Tottenham Hotspur and the man who runs the finances
and negotiates all the contracts and transfers is in America currently
due to his mother tragically passing away. For Harry to be talking in
the press about a new contract for himself when his boss, the person who
decides whether to give him a new contract is in another part of the
world grieving over a deceased parent is a shocking thing to do.

Now Harry may not have known Daniel Levy’s exact circumstances,
though I highly doubt he was completely unaware of what was going on.
But to make these damaging comments (and Harry did specifically say “It is up to the chairman. If he doesn’t want to give me another contract, it is his decision”) at
this particular juncture is at best crass and careless, and at worst
the words of a completely insensitive scoundrel obsessed only with his
future and not bothered by the damage he is inflicting on both the club
who employ him and his boss who is currently in a state of mourning and
perhaps not in a position to defend his interests.

The timing sticks in the craw, because Harry could have made these
comments at any time. He makes these comments not at a time when they
would have received less attention and when Levy was in a position to
deal with his complaints, but at a time when Levy is out of action and
mourning the death of a loved one. Also a month ago he said “I don’t go
running to him (the chairman) for a new contract”. His comments
definitely have the feel of running to the chairman for a new deal.

He also makes these comments when transfer dealings and contract
negotiations are in full swing. How for example does Jan Vertonghen feel
reading in the British press that the manager of the club he’s set to
sign for might be about to have a change of manager? Not to mention the
players who have only 12 months left on their contracts as well who
hearing this may well have their agents rushing to Levy wanting contract
    extensions and money.

He also says about rumours of him perhaps going to manage some oil-rich club in Qatar “No.
I don’t speak to anybody else, it’s not my job. I am under contract at
Tottenham. I keep seeing something about Qatar but I’ve never been to
    Qatar in my life.”
This I presume is true. But he doesn’t mention there how last year he said he almost went to Dubai club Al-Ahli FC and that he said the Chelsea job would be ‘a dream job’ last month.

What adds a further bitter taste is the fact that Redknapp has brought in agent Paul Stretford to
represent him in contract negotiations. Stretford is Wayne Rooney’s
agent and the person who is believed to have advised him to hand in a
transfer request to Man Unuted last year. He is a controversial figure
who according to Andy Cole (a player he used to represent and was
friends with) ‘wasn’t motivated by friendship but money’.

Nothing unusual there, football agents are not renowned for their
altruism and philanthropy, but there is Stretford’s repeated dealings in
court to consider. He admitted in 2010 when he first had Rooney as a
client he didn’t explain to Rooney and his father what documents they
were signing and what effect signing would have. The prosecuting
    barrister called this ‘absolutely extraordinary’.

Stretford has also been banned from football by the FA for 18 months
(9 months suspended) for misconduct and amongst other things making
false/misleading statements to police and in court proceedings. He’s
been sacked by his former employer Proactive Sports Management for
‘gross misconduct’ and in the words of Sir Alex Ferguson is “Not the
most popular man in the world – certainly at our club”. Not the sort of
figure a fan wants to see loitering around your club.

There are other things Redknapp said that I have problems with. He said “Things couldn’t have gone better since I’ve been there” which is nonsense. Spurs have just finished 4th and due to Chelsea’s subsequent victory in the Champions League final missed out on Champions League football.

This is after we were two points off the top of the table in mid-January and were 10 points clear of 4th place in mid-February. 3rd
place was the least we could expect from that position and to then say
after a collapse to finish 4th ‘things couldn’t have gone better’ is
simply insulting to fans of the club. Also this is completely
hypocritical given his comments about Spurs ‘going for the title’ and
‘being the top London club’ throughout the season.

His comments about how Champions League football is overrated in its
ability to entice players to clubs is what appears to have grabbed the
headlines. On this he has a point. See how Man City signed the likes of
David Silva and Vincent Kompany without Champions League, or even how
Atletico Madrid kept hold of Aguero for so long and promptly signed
Radamel Falcao as a replacement without Champions League football. Spurs
supposedly being close to signing Vertonghen and Loic Remy illustrates
    the point further.

But it’s his association with Stretford, an agent previously banned
by the FA for misconduct and the sheer insensitivity of his comments
virtually demanding a new contract that anger me. He’s guilty of at best
being careless and insensitive, at worst guilty of rank
insubordination, greed and selfishness. Redknapp has a lot to answer
for, and hopefully an apology to Daniel Levy is on its way.

Condolences to Daniel Levy and his family for the loss of his mother.

Everything that was said there is true and to the point and what most Spurs supporters think.

I don't think Levy is about to sack Redknapp, I believe he will run down his contract and give himself a year to find a top replacement with out having to pay him anything.

I would like him to go now but I don't think he will.

Its a bit strange hearing redknapps comments yesterday the one part that irked me more than any was his suggestion that the players will be affected by all this uncertainty over the manager yet back when capello was sacked and he came out into the limelight as favourite for the england job and then things went belly up for us he made a statement then that the players just wanted to play football whoever the manager was and it does,nt affect players not knowing if a new guy would be coming in hypocrite or what

Either Redknapp is a victim of misquotes , or he is undoubtedly the biggest mug of all time, totally self obsessed and driven by power and greed , the ironic thing is , if levy doesn't offer him a new contract , then by arries own words he is not rated , funny .

I think what Levy will do is run his contract down , and back him into a corner, like a chess match , make your opponent make the next move, touch word arry will resign , and we wont have to pay him a penny, but saying all that, i do get the feeling to a degree that arry is trying to false the situation by speaking out of term, perhaps he is looking for the sack .

Some good comments here. Firstly Peader about Harry saying that players just wanted to play football whoever the manager was, good spot. Baz saying that Nic thinks Harry the Gob is doing a good job, well I dare say that Nic and indeed all the Gooner supporters are enjoying seeing Harry destroy this club. Never in the History of this club have we ever had such a self centered, conceited mouthy b-----d as Redknapp and I for one want him out. Perhaps I should not say this but I think now there will be posters who will understand why I was so gutted when big Martin Jol, Spurs through and through got the sack, a true gentleman, and a true professional who knew how to conduct himself in front of the media and never said a bad word against the Chairman even after he was treated so badly. Bring the big man back and get some unity back at Spurs.

As you pointed out yesterday Len if Arry is doing such a dreadful job the list of prospective managers who would do better is short to non existent

I am not too bothered whether Arry stays or goes

I have always regarded him as a lucky manager who would get found out

Harrys all about self promotion and self interest in my view.

One of his greatest fears is public humiliation. He has been humiliated by the FA and now fears not being given a new contract or replaced by a new Manager.

Goota post again, somewhat irritated. When reading Arrys interview/s

The message that comes across is that he is urging / hurrying DL rush to make a decision! I say shut it and wait.

I've heard Harry on other occasions when talking about buying players when he goes into denial about a specific player they maybe interested in and he comes out with, I leave that up to the chairman he decides it's his decision. Exactly Arry it's his decision not yours. So Shut it.

    What about these comments.

March 23rd 2012 Harry Redknapp responds to suggestions that his name
being touted for the England job has had an effect on results. 'Absolute
nonsense. That's the biggest load of nonsense I've ever heard in my
life. They don't care whether I'm manager next year. They wouldn't lose
    any sleep over that.' 'Footballers
play the game, they come in every day and train. Someone else walks in
here tomorrow-the king is dead, long live the king. They don't worry.
They don't think 'Harry is going to England' or 'he is going to go
    somewhere else''.

June 5th 2012 Harry Redknapp responds to lack
of clarity over his contract. 'The simple situation is, I've got a year
left on my contract. It's up to Tottenham whether they want to extend
that contract or not. If they don't extend it and I go into my last
year, it's not an easy one when players know you've only got a year
left. 'It's not a case of me looking for security. What it's about is
players knowing you've got a year left on your contract, and knowing
that it doesn't work, basically. I think it's a situation of 'well he
might not be here next year.'

Er......why has no-one in the media picked this up?

still the best manager weve had for years, our finishing positions tell us that. harry is asking for a longer contract, where is the problem in that ? , it shows me he is happy to want to stay and build something at spurs. if not offered one then quite rightly he can move on if offered something else later in the season but it will just cause more unrest at our club at the wrong time. when the england job came up he told it as it was as far as i could see. he said he hadnt been in any contact with the fa about it, if offered it he would be interested but had not been contacted. who would begrudge him it if he had got it.seems to me hes trying to sort out his long term future at spurs, and from years gone by to where harrys put us now i would be happy if levy signs him up for another 3 year deal. hes grown this club into a regular top 5 finishing club and its that and results that matter to me, not what is always reported about him saying this and saying that. it is annoying at times i agree but i now take it with a pinch of salt most times.careful what you wish for cos who would we get in at the moment, harry can still attract bigger name players to sign if levy backs him.seems like im in the minority on here on this but thats my opinion. load your guns lol

No Shear but it was never really about what he hasn't done for us although I was really p*ssed off at losing that 13 point gap over the goons when he was dallying with the England job as was every Spurs supporter mate. It's his gob in front of the camera's that really get's my goat and his underhanded running down of club and supporters. He tells all and sundry that if he moved on it wouldn't make any difference to the players but now because he wants an extension to his contract he is saying if he don't get it. it could undermine the players. Well, which is it Arry? I have always admitted he has done a very good job but there is more to it than that IMO.
