A directive from THST Re' the Y word.. Empty A directive from THST Re' the Y word..

Post by BazSpur Sat Oct 05 2013, 09:06

    042013

The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Trust have issued a statement in the wake of the one issued by the Met Police that Spurs fans could face arrest for chanting the word “yid” at future Spurs games.

Some helpful information here should anyone get in any sort of trouble and you can save it for future reference should you find yourself in any sort of bother as I know I will be joining in the chants.

THST has noted, with great sadness, the statement issued by the Metropolitan Police over the last 24 hours in relation to the new interpretation being applied to Section 5 of the 1986 Public Order Act, classifying the word ‘Yid’ as either ‘insulting’ or ‘racist’.

For years, Board Members of THST have stood with our fans, home and away, as one. And that’s something we’ll continue to do, as we cannot stand idly by while our loyal supporters are unfairly targeted.

It is THST’s sincere belief that no Spurs fan uses the term ‘Yid’ in an offensive or insulting way yet, sadly, the distinction between the use of the term as a badge of honour and a call to arms by Tottenham Hotspur supporters and the anti-Semitic abuse levelled at our fans by supporters of opposing teams appears to have been dismissed by both the FA and the Metropolitan Police.

THST believes there is no place for racism at White Hart Lane or, indeed, within football in general, but to label the songs our fans have been singing and the chants our fans have been chanting for decades as ‘racist’ overnight, with no legal precedent, is incomprehensible to us.

Since our last statement of 11th September 2013, we have not waited, complacently, for this issue to disappear. We have sought the opinion of legal counsel and, subsequently, understand the position now adopted by the Metropolitan Police could be in breach of Human Rights and/or freedom of expression. Certainly, those actively campaigning to repeal Section 5 subscribe to that view.

THST has a responsibility not to willfully encourage any Spurs fan to continue chanting and singing the word ‘Yid’ this weekend with no regard for the consequences.

First, the Police will not only be monitoring West Ham fans for any racist/ anti-Semitic abuse during the match. The Met have made it clear they also consider the term ‘Yid’ to be racist and offensive, so Spurs fans singing or chanting ‘Yid Army’, or ‘Yids’ will fall into this category.

The fact that thousands of Spurs fans will, probably, be chanting or singing ‘Yid/ Yiddo’ does not mean an individual fan will be protected. As was witnessed at the Chelsea match, any one fan can be singled out and issued with a warning: it doesn’t have to be an entire block.

THST understands that the Police will initially approach a fan seen to be using the word ‘Yid’ and ask them to refrain from using the term. If they persist, a warning will be issued. If use of the word continues, an ejection or arrest may follow.

THST urges all supporters to be aware of the Police stance on this subject and to make their decision as to whether or not to use the term on Sunday equipped with all the information available.

THST also asks that all fans attending the West Ham United match on Sunday note the number of our recommended solicitor should they encounter any problems:

    Bailey Nicholson Grayson - T: 07818 575 793 (24 hour line)

We strongly advise fans not to accept a caution and not to accept a duty solicitor. Ask for Bailey Nicholson Grayson and wait for one of their team to arrive.

THST will also be in attendance at the game on Sunday and will offer help to any fan needing assistance.

The Trust Board cares passionately about our Club and our fans and will work tirelessly towards gaining a conclusion on this matter, either way. We will not abandon our fan base in its’ greatest hour of need and, once again, we ask you all to work with us towards a positive outcome.

So there you have it, the THST feel as though we are being singled out and urge anyone to not accept any sort of caution and have given the number of a recommended solicitor.

Take caution but most importantly don’t be afraid of their new hitler stance regime they are trying to impose.

This is all getting bloody ridiculous now. Personally i think the problem all along has been the C word (Chelsea) and the W word West Ham) whose fans have used the word as an insult for ages . As said in the statement Spurs fans then used it as a badge of honour. I have said before that I don't use it myself the same as I wouldn't use the N word but don't follow the logic and hypocracy of people like David Baddiel.
Glad to see the above advice to our club supporters and the support they have been offered though.

David Baddiel is a man with an eye on resurrecting his flagging career as a so called Comedian. Personally I never found him to be the slightest bit funny as I told him on twitter. He seized the opportunity for a bit of publicity and took it. The man is a hypocrite. For someone who holds supposed views against racism why is he supporting a club who harbour among their fans some of the most racist supporters in the land. Supporters who openly give the Nazi salute at football games. What I also told him on twitter was that he should start a campaign at the club he supports to weed out the racists and fascists that follow the club that he also follows. If I felt like he says he does there is no way I could support a club where there fans simulate the noise of the gas chambers toward spurs supporters and there is no way I could support a club whose supporters openly give the Nazi salute towards spurs supporters. No, instead the man decides to take the easy way out by attacking Spurs fans for using the word Yid while doing nothing about the scum that follow Chelsea.

Great post Baz, a rep from me. I agree with seebee that it has become a joke now. I never used the word Yid at matches, I don't know that it was around when I went, it was just a chant of come on you Spurs, or your a bloody load of rubbish depending on how we were playing. Does anyone remember when the Yid chant started?. I thought the worst chant or song I heard was from the Leeds so called supporters after the Munich disaster that killed so many United players, perhaps I might be wrong here but wasn't it the dam busters march?, I think they sung it for quite a number of years but don't think they do these days.

Thanks for the Rep Len. It really does disgust me that Baddiel a man who is so opposed to racism against his race still follows a club that has some of the most vile racist scum in Britain. It's not just Chelsea. West Ham and Leeds are also culpable in that respect. Baddiel says he opposes racism against Jews and others. Well, prove it Mr Baddiel. Stand up and be counted and disown Chelsea. FC

Baddiel makes me laugh. As is rightly pointed his choosen clubs fans are less then blameless. Looking at his age he must have begun supporting them around the 70's/80's so why choose to support a club that was widely believed at that time to have a vociferous right wing section of suppot? I have asked 2 Jewish guys I know how they feel about the use of Yid by Spurs fans. One, a Charlton fan, said he found the word offensive when used as a verbal attack against Spurs but had no real issues with Spurs fans using the term but did find it strange that non-Jewish supporters chanted it en masse. The other guy, not a football fan, had issues with Spurs fans using it. He could understand Jews using it as a term of endearment and welcome such as black people using the N word but doubted that will ever happen and struggled to find correctness for Spurs fans using the Y word even as a means of defense. He felt uncomfortable with thousands of people chanting the word with little understanding of what the word meant, it's brutalisation in previous times & it made him uneasy. I used to use the term freely in refering to myself as a Yiddo, indeed some of my friends chant the term at me in welcome. I'm not Jewish. I wonder if Jermain Defoe scores the winner will the Met have to arrest a large portion of the crowd on Sunday? Be interesting to see what happens. I think the pressure is slowly growing to stop Spurs fans using the term . . . .

I think it will be very difficult to stop it vis. In fact there is a group on face book that are all set to start chanting Yid Army at 4.28 tomorrow. If they do it will be very interesting to see the reaction from the police. They have set the ground rules so they will have to try and enforce them. If they don't or if they fail to make the arrests they are threatening, then what? At the end of the day Spurs supporters can stand with hands over their mouths chanting Yid Army. What can the police do?

I just think "gentle pressure" is being applied Baz to stop usage of the term. And in these days of political correctness ruling all it may well slowly happen . . . .

Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United fans have been warned against chanting the word "yid" ahead of their derby clash on Sunday.

The Metropolitan Police said fans using the term could be arrested.

The warning comes as the north London club has sent a questionnaire asking if the word should be banned from chants.

Spurs have a strong Jewish following and have been the target of abuse from opposition fans, although some Spurs supporters use the term themselves.

The chairman of the footballers' union, Clarke Carlisle, said fans should be banned for using the word, but Prime Minister David Cameron has said people should not be prosecuted unless it is used as an insult.
    'Debated at length'

The Football Association has warned supporters that the use of such words could result in a banning order or criminal charges.

The Met said the term caused harassment, alarm or distress to others, and officers would be taking action to stamp it out.

Ch Supt Mick Johnson, the match commander on Sunday, said: "This topic has been debated at length but our position is clear, racism and offensive language have no place in football or indeed in society.

"Those supporters who engage in such behaviour should be under no illusion that they may be committing an offence and may be liable to a warning or be arrested."

West Ham United also warned supporters that "unacceptable conduct" at Sunday's match could lead to fans being banned from attending games.

In a statement on its website the football club said: "The club, along with the Metropolitan Police, will continue to adopt a zero tolerance policy towards any form of discriminatory behaviour this year.

"Any fan found to be acting inappropriately - including racist, anti-Semitic and homophobic behaviour - will be punished to the full extent of the law and banned from attending matches."

In a statement issued late on Friday the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Trust (THST) said they believed no Spurs fan "uses the term 'yid' in an offensive or insulting way".

But it said the distinction between the use of the term as a "badge of honour and a call to arms" and the "anti-Semitic abuse levelled at our fans by supporters of opposing teams appears to have been dismissed by the FA and the Metropolitan Police".

The decision to "label the songs our fans have been singing and the chants our fans have been chanting for decades as racist overnight" was, it said, incomprehensible and could be in breach of freedom of expression legislation.

The statement ended not by warning fans not to use the term, but urged those at the game "to make their decision as to whether or not to use the term on Sunday equipped with all the information available".

A directive from THST Re' the Y word.. _70311532_70311526

Tottenham Hotspur fans have ignored a police warning not to use the word "Yid" in chants at a match against West Ham United.

Spurs supporters chanted "We'll sing what we want" and "Yid Army" at White Hart Lane, in north London.

Before the match, the Met Police warned fans using the term could be arrested. One fan was arrested at half-time.

Spurs have a strong Jewish following and have been the target of abuse from opposition fans.

However, some Spurs supporters use the term themselves in an act of defiance.
    'Badge of honour'

Before the game, which West Ham won 3-0, match commander Ch Supt Mick Johnson said "racism and offensive language have no place in football".

A police spokesman said officers were speaking with fans on their way into the stadium about the issue.

The Met Police said one Tottenham fan had been arrested for a public order offence and was in custody at a north London police station.

The Football Association has warned supporters the use of such words could result in a banning order or criminal charges.

Last month, the chairman of the footballers' union, Clarke Carlisle, said fans should be banned for using the word, but Prime Minister David Cameron has said people should not be prosecuted unless it is used as an insult.

On Friday, the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust said they believed no Spurs fan "uses the term 'yid' in an offensive or insulting way".

However, it said the distinction between the use of the term as a "badge of honour and a call to arms" and the "anti-Semitic abuse levelled at our fans by supporters of opposing teams, appears to have been dismissed by the FA and the Metropolitan Police".

Before the game, West Ham United also warned supporters that "unacceptable conduct" at the match could lead to fans being banned from attending games.

"Y*d is short for "Y*ddish" in the old Jewish language.
It's like calling a Australian an Aussie
A Briton a Brit and an Arsenal fan a Cunt
