Ten memorable meetings between Manchester United and Tottenham

    Tottenham 5 Man Utd 1 - 1965/66

Let us start with a magnificent day for Tottenham in the 1960s, when the likes of Jimmy Greaves and Alan Gilzean ran riot against a Manchester United side including George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton. Greaves scored the goal of the game as he skipped through the United defence before finishing in fine style for Bill Nicholson's side. The Red Devils would, however, get their revenge with a 5-1 win at Old Trafford just a couple of months later.

    Tottenham 2 Man Utd 1 - 1979/80

Tottenham and Manchester United met six times in the 1979/80 season but it is the first of those encounters that remains the most memorable for Spurs fans, largely because of a wonder goal from the hugely talented Glenn Hoddle. Having exchanged passes with Ossie Ardiles, Hoddle slammed a volley from an awkward height into the top corner to help Tottenham to a 2-1 League Cup win. United responded in the second leg, though, winning 3-1 to advance in the competition.

    Man Utd 3 Tottenham 3 - 1986/87

A topsy-turvy thriller that saw both sides take control at one stage or another before having to settle for a draw. United stormed into an early 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Norman Whiteside and Peter Davenport, before Tottenham hit back with a diving header from Gary Mabbut. Kevin Moran inadvertently turned a Glenn Hoddle shot into his own net to bring the scores level and Clive Allen then put Spurs 3-2 ahead. There was to be one final twist, though, as Davenport equalised with a late penalty.

    Man Utd 2 Tottenham 1 - 1998/99

The final day of the Premier League season in 1998/99 saw United requiring a home win to secure the title and complete an historic treble. Tottenham had little to play for with their mid-table position already assured, while many fans did not mind losing as London rivals Arsenal were still in with a chance of finishing top, but the players had not read the script and opened the scoring through Les Ferdinand. The Red Devils needed to show their champion spirit and duly obliged, with David Beckham equalising and Andy Cole netting a delightful chip to spark wild celebrations.

    Tottenham 3 Man Utd 1 - 1999/00

Spurs fell behind to a Ryan Giggs goal at White Hart Lane but rallied impressively to emerge as winners. Steffen Iversen's strike and an own goal from Paul Scholes set the comeback in motion and Stephen Carr put the icing on the cake with a sensational third. Picking up the ball a long way from goal, the full-back dribbled into the space in front of him before unleashing a thunderous piledriver past Mark Bosnich.

    Tottenham 3 Manchester United 5 - 2001/02

One of the most extraordinary matches in Premier League history, and undoubtedly the most famous between these two sides, helped create an aura of invincibility around Manchester United. Spurs looked set to enjoy one of their finest performances after establishing a 3-0 lead at the interval, but the job was only half done and United bounced back from a position of almost certain defeat to pick up all three points. Andy Cole set the ball rolling with United's first, before Laurent Blanc further reduced the deficit and Ruud van Nistelrooy equalised. Juan Sebastian Veron put United in front for the first time but they were not finished there, with David Beckham completing the turnaround.

    Man Utd 0 Tottenham 0 - 2004/05

If Tottenham were left stunned by the comeback in 2001/02, they felt a sense of complete injustice after being denied a first victory at Old Trafford in more than 15 years. There had been nothing to separate the teams for 88 minutes before Pedro Mendes tried his luck from the halfway line and the ball was spilled over his goal-line by Roy Carroll. Fortunately for the keeper, the officials must have had their eyes shut until he clawed the ball back out again, with the record books showing a goalless draw.

    Tottenham 0 Man Utd 4 - 2006/07

Tottenham were in a good run of form going into this fixture but were swept aside by a rampant Manchester United side on their way to reclaiming the Premier League title. Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time before further goals from Nemaja Vidic, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs in the second period. The main talking point was still to come, though, with John O'Shea having to be used as an emergency goalkeeper for the closing stages after Edwin van der Sar broke his nose.

    Man Utd 5 Tottenham 2 - 2008/09

A comeback in a similar vein to the match at White Hart Lane seven years earlier, but this one also had a fair amount of controversy to throw into the mix. Darren Bent and Luka Modric had scored to give Spurs a 2-0 lead, only for a dubious penalty awarded to United to turn the game on its head. Cristiano Ronaldo converted the spot-kick and the Red Devils proceeded to run riot, with Wayne Rooney and Ronaldo grabbing two goals apiece and Tottenham old boy Dimitar Berbatov netting the fifth.

    Man Utd 2 Tottenham 0 - 2010/11

There was another controversial goal in this meeting as United continued their fine recent record against Tottenham. Nemanja Vidic opened the scoring for Sir Alex Ferguson's side but the match was still on a knife-edge in the closing stages when Nani made the points safe in bizarre style. Spurs keeper Heurelho Gomes rolled the ball out for a free-kick after the Portuguese winger had clearly handballed, but he had not been penalised and took advantage of the opportunity that presented itself to slot into an empty net.

So far so good. Thought Adabadbigtoe started poorly but boy oh boy did he get better as the half went on. We just need to keep possession more in the 2nd half as we look as though we could cut Utd open on the counter. We also need to keep it tight at the back like we were early season . . . . .

GREAT win, a bit hairy at the end but you always felt we were going to do it. There wasn't the late goal fergie fear.

We played a great attacking game as we did against Stoke. Every player was up for it and fought for everything they played as a team and the boys did us proud.

Interesting comment from Eriksen yesterday that the team is playing with a lot of confidence now where as under AVB they played with fear.

This team and the way we are playing we would never have been thrashed by City and L'pool.

I know this is not a great Utd side but to win at Old Trafford is not easy. I hope we start moving up again now, the trouble is there are at least 5 teams playing well also.

A great result, what a lovely late Christmas present. By all accounts we were lucky not to have a penalty awarded against us, but hey it makes up for the goal we scored that wasn't given a few seasons ago when it was well over the line, who was it that scored that goal?. United hate it when anything goes against them at home. Now let's stuff the gooners in the cup.
