Once-upon-a-time, in a galaxy far,
far away, Tottenham
Hotspur were apparently a pretty good football team. As a result,
the club has acquired some rather high-profile supporters over the
years. Legend has it that the likes of Bob Marley, Shania
Twain, Emma ‘Baby Spice’ Bunton and Bryan
Adams are all Tottenham Hotspur fans. However, without photographic
evidence, or a quote coming straight from the horses-mouth, those guys
are not going to make it onto the list. However, the following ten
celebrities are all on record as pledging their allegiance to the club.
Here are ten of Tottenham’s most famous supporters.1. Peter CookDescribed
by Stephen Fry as the ‘funniest man who ever drew breath’, Peter Cook
was a lifelong Tottenham Hotspur fan, alluding to his club in the
infamous ‘Derek and Clive’ tapes he recorded with Dudley Moore.Cook
was an extremely influential figure within British comedy, and is
widely regarded as a leading figure in the British satire boom of the
1960s.Cook read French and German at Cambridge University, and
meant to become a career diplomat. Unfortunately, by the time he’d
graduated Britain “had run out of colonies”, as he put it.Cook
died in 1995, and ten years after his death in Januray 2005, he was
ranked first in a list entitled ‘The Comedian’s Comedian’, a poll of
more than 300 comics, comedy writers and producers and directors
throughout the English speaking world, who believed Cook their favourite
comedian of the 20th Century. Here’s Peter Cook
on Parkinson, with none other than Tottenham legend Danny Blanchflower.2. Ray KelvinRay Kelvin
would probably draw a blank from most, but Mr. Kelvin is in fact the
founder of English fashion label Ted Baker.Kelvin
is a lifelong Tottenham fan, and counts Steve Perryman as a good friend
after the pair worked together at Exeter City.3. Paul
WhitehouseStar of the Fast Show, Harry
Enfield and Chums and now Bellamy’s People, Paul
Whitehouse can be seen wearing the 1993-95 Tottenham home shirt in a few early Harry Enfield
sketches, which I used to love as a youngster.Whitehouse moved to
Enfield, North London when he was four, and remembers his fist game at
White Hart Lane as a 2-2 draw, with Alan Gilzean netting a trademark
front post header from a corner.4. J.K. RowlingThe
author of the Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling is one of the most
famous authors in the world, and one of the most successful. Further,
J.K. Rowling pledges her allegiance to Tottenham.Rowling comes from a family of Spurs fans,
with her dad’s side of the family all Spurs
supporters. Although she concedes she herself is not a very passionate
supporter, if she is to watch any team, it would be Spurs.
That’s good enough for me Jo.5. Rupert
GrintWhilst actors such as Ray Liotta
and Colin Firth have all been accused of supporting the Lilywhites, no
evidence of this support exists in print or photograph. However,
England’s greatest actor, Rupert
Grint, is a documented Tottenham fan.Grint, who plays Ronald Weasley in
the Harry Potter films, was last seen at the Lane for Tottenham’s 2-2 draw with Leeds in the FA Cup this
season. Here he is on Spurs TV
online, looking very excited at the prospect of watching us lose to Manchester
United at home. Hurrah!6. Steve NashTottenham appear to have a rather large following in
Canada, with Bryan Adams and Shania
Twain linked with the club in the past. However, neither has shown
the commitment to Spurs
that Canadian Basketball player Steve Nash
has shown.Nash was born in South Africa to a Welsh mother and
English father, which could explain his love for English football.
However, it is Tottenhm that Nash holds closest too his heart. Twice
named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player for his exploits with the Phoenix
Suns, Nash has identified an ambition to one day buy Tottenham.
“I’d like to be an owner [of
Spurs]…It’s
something I could do for the rest of my life.”
7. Jude LawAfter Rupert
Grint, or Ronald ‘Rocket’ Weasley as he is better known, England’s
second most famous actor must be Jude Law.
Luckily, Law also happens to be a Spurs fan. When
Law isn’t going out with beautiful women, or being paid ridiculous
amounts of money to pretend to go out with beautiful women, Law gets to
hang out with his kids and watch Tottenham. Good old life!8. Jo WhileyIn
the past, Jo ‘hi-hat’ Whiley has been accused of having a fear of death
owing to her obsession with new music. However, whilst the Radio 1 DJ
has had her critics in the past, after finding out Jo and her family are
all Spurs
supporters, I personally believe she is one of the finest DJ and
presenters of our time. Further, she has excellent taste in music.9. Salmon
RushdieAuthor of Midnight’s Children and
Satanic Verses, Salmon
Rushdie is one of the few authors in the world whose work has led to
a state calling for his death. After writing Satanic Verses, a fatwā
was issued by Ayatollah Ruholla Khomeini, the Supreme Leader of Iran, in
February 1989.However, aside from a penchant for blaspheming,
Rushdie is also a huge Spurs fan!
In fact, Rushdie has identified his love for Tottenham as a pseudo-religion:
‘Why
else would one follow Tottenham Hotspur? You have to be a very deep believer. I
came to England in 1961 and
that’s the year that Spurs
were very good – the last time they won the League Championship. If you
support a team that fails to win the league for 44 years, it does feel
like a kind of cult.’
Excuse me? Supporting Spurs is not
a cult! That’s blasphemy, off with his head… again!10. Mathew
HorneContrary to popular belief, Gavin,
or Mathew Horne from Gavin and Stacey, is not actually from
Billericay. In fact, he’s not even from the South-East. Mathew
Horne is actually from Nottingham, and yet, despite geography, Horne
is one of Tottenham’s most vocal fans.In Gavin and Stacey,
Horne received a signed Michael Dawson photo, and also occasionally
wears the Tottenham 125 year commemorative shirt. Nice.Well
there you have it. Ten of the more famous Spurs
supporters you are likely to hear of. If you happen to have hard
evidence that there are even more famous people missing from the list,
feel obliged to leave a comment. However, I think it’s fair to say that
as celebrity fans go, Tottenham are well represented…You can find me on
