Tottenham Hotspur are ready to rescue Brazil striker Adriano from his Serie A nightmare at Roma, with Giallorossi manager Claudio Ranieri indicating that he can leave in January.
“Why isn’t Adriano playing? Because there are players at the club who are in better shape right now,” Ranieri responded tetchily to reporters in a press conference.
“If I’m not happy somewhere, then I walk away.
“I always tell the lads that if they don’t do things with love, then it’s best they go, but if Adriano wasn’t in a team with many champions, he would always play.”
Spurs have long needed a striker capable of playing alone up front, with Peter Crouch, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Jermain Defoe yet to convince that they are capable at the highest level, and Robbie Keane surplus to requirements.
Still, whether Adriano is that man is yet to be seen, but at his best, he is unplayable.
A shot so powerful goalkeepers flinch rather than attempt to save it, skilful with the ball and possessing strength and height, the Brazilian has all the tools to perform in the Premier League.
All that holds him back are personal troubles – a much publicised battle with alcohol left him unable to perform to his potential at Inter Milan, but he recovered his form in Brazil with 19 goals in 31 appearances.
Injuries and the form of Roma strikers Marco Borriello and Mirko Vucinic have prevented Adriano getting in the side, and Tottenham would certainly be interested if he was available on a free.
The only thing preventing Spurs chairman Daniel Levy from going through with the deal is the brief appearance against Cluj in the UEFA Champions League, which cup-ties Adriano for the competition.
Otherwise, a move to North London could certainly be on the cards.
