Tottenham Hotspur will reap the rewards of playing in the Europa League next season, according to former Spurs boss Glenn Hoddle.
Harry Redknapp’s men had to settle for a spot in Europe’s secondary club competition after finishing fifth in the Premier League and missing out on Champions League football next season.
But Hoddle, who won the Uefa Cup with Spurs as a player in 1984, is
convinced that a run in the re-branded competition will benefit the
north Londoners as they bid to seal a place in the top four next term.
“As long as they keep the relatively key players fit then playing in
the Europa League might actually pacify the squad because you get a
chance to keep them fit and give them experience,” said Hoddle.
“Then if they do get back into the Champions League they will already
have that European experience – so I think it could be a positive thing
as long as they don’t get a crop of injuries.”
Hoddle, who was speaking at the inaugural Football40 legends tournament at Craven Cottage on Sunday, believes his former club are not in need of a summer overhaul.
He continued: “There’s a need for every squad to be looked into to
improve it – Harry knows what he wants and what he doesn’t want.
“But every time you look at Tottenham’s bench there’s a stack of
internationals there, and that shows you how far the squad has come over
the last two or three seasons.”
Hoddle, who made over 370 appearances for Tottenham between 1975 and 1987, is the technical director of Football40 – a new style of 11-a-side football designed specifically for for legends clashes.
The inaugural tournament, held at Fulham’s home ground on Sunday, was
won by a Chelsea side boasting the likes of Gianfranco Zola and Jimmy
Floyd Hasselbaink.
“I think there’s a really good future for it,” said Hoddle of the new
format. “This could be an opportunity for players to prolong their
careers. I think people still want to watch the likes of Zola and
Hasselbaink.
“It was wonderful to see so many people enjoy themselves playing
football again. Credit to all the players because it’s not easy – they
haven’t trained for this but they’ve turned up and done themselves
credit.”
