Sorry this one is so late appearing peeps.Been mucho busy. Is this a game Redknapp wants ? Reckon it will be the Europa Cup team again with Gomes in goal. Difficult game and I think Stoke will be up for this as they will fancy a return trip to Wembley this season and they probably fancy their chances in this competition . . . .

    TEAM NEWS

Stoke have no fresh fitness concerns following Sunday's 4-0 Premier League defeat by Sunderland.

Peter Crouch, Rory Delap, Matthew Etherington and Marc Wilson all returned from injury but Tony Pulis is likely to make changes.

William Gallas and Sandro are in line to make their first starts of the season for Spurs after recovering from injuries picked up during the summer.

Heurelho Gomes is set to play in goal as Harry Redknapp rotates his squad.

    MATCH PREVIEW

Stoke and Tottenham approach the game in contrasting moods having been at opposite ends of 4-0 scorelines at the weekend.

The Potters' heavy defeat by Sunderland was their first in 10 competitive games this season and, coming three days after a trip to Kiev, will raise questions about how well-equipped they are to deal with a hectic programme of European and domestic action.

Spurs were at their fluent best in overwhelming Liverpool on Sunday - proof that they have put heavy defeats by the two Manchester clubs behind them.

For both sides this will be a third game in six days after Europa League assignments last week, meaning Tony Pulis and Harry Redknapp are likely to rest many of their first-choice players.

As such, this tie will test the strength of their respective squads - something that may give Spurs the edge.

    MATCH FACTS

    Head-to-head
    • This is the first ever meeting between the two sides in the competition.
    • Their last cup clash was an FA Cup tie in 1976 which ended in a 2-1 replay win for Stoke after the first game ended 1-1.
    • Spurs have won their last two games at the Britannia Stadium by 2-1.

    Stoke
    • Stoke have made the fourth-round stage of the Carling Cup for the last three seasons.
    • This is the first season they have entered the competition at the third round stage.
    • Their win against Fulham in the third round last season was the first time they had beaten a top-flight side in the League Cup in 10 years.
    • The Potters won the League Cup in 1971-2 with a 2-1 win against Chelsea in the final.

    Tottenham
    • Spurs have only failed to make the quarter-finals twice in the last eight seasons.
    • They were knocked out of last season's competition in the third round by Arsenal, losing 4-1 after extra time.
    • Spurs have won the competition four times, their most recent triumph coming in 2008 when they beat Chelsea in the final.
    • They have been knocked out the competition by Premier League sides every season since that victory.

    Team news

Sandro and William Gallas could return to action in Tuesday night's Carling Cup third round tie at Stoke.

Neither player has featured so far this season.

Sandro suffered a knee injury on international duty with Brazil at the Copa America in the summer while William is on the way back from a calf problem that struck early in pre-season.

"I'm hoping William Gallas may be okay to come back, we'll see how he is after training this morning," reported Harry Redknapp at Spurs Lodge on Monday.

"Sandro is also on his way back and I may get an hour out of him tomorrow. It would be great if I could get those two back playing again.

"Other than that it will be one or two of the younger players who have played recently and done well and one or two of the seniors players who didn't feature on Sunday."

The manager said he was likely to make a changes from the team that was so impressive against Liverpool on Sunday, but insisted he was after a win at Stoke, nothing less.

"We want to stay in the competition, we want to win and go all the way if we can," he said.

"We could have Sandro and William Gallas back, Pav needs another game, van der Vaart is back, Gomes, Bassong, Corluka - that's not a bad team, is it?

"One or two of the youngsters will get another chance as well."

Michael Dawson, Danny Rose, Steven Pienaar, Tom Huddlestone, Aaron Lennon all remain sidelined.

Stoke City host Tottenham Hotspur at the Britannia Stadium on Tuesday 20th September 2011 in a Football League (Carling) Cup third round tie, which will be settled on the night by extra time or a penalty shoot-out.

Both clubs received a bye to the third round of the competition due to their involvement in the 2011-12 UEFA Europa League.

This will be the 81st time the two teams have met and their first match against each other in the Football League Cup.

The first meeting came at the Victoria Ground when Stoke City were playing as Stoke FC in the old first round of the FA Cup in February 1896 in a match Stoke won 5-0.

Stoke became one of the 12 founding members of the Football League in 1888 and the clubs were drawn together in the third round of the FA Cup in February 1899 at the Victoria Ground with Stoke winning 4-1.

The first match at White Hart Lane between the clubs was a friendly played in March 1900 with Spurs, then Champions of the Southern League, beating Stoke 6-0.

Spurs joined the Football League for the 1908-09 season, replacing Stoke who had resigned at the end of the previous season for financial reasons. The clubs didn't meet in a League match until April 1920 in the Second Division with Tottenham winning 2-0 at the Lane and 3-1 at the Victoria Ground.

The first meeting in Division One came in March 1923 at Stoke which resulted in a 0-0 draw. Spurs won the reverse fixture at the Lane a week later 3-1.

The clubs met for five seasons in the Second Division between 1928 to 1933 and for two seasons in Division One from 1934 to 1935.

After the Second World War, the clubs met in the modern FA Cup third round in January 1947 at White Hart Lane which resulted in a 2-2 draw with Stoke winning the replay 1-0 thanks to a Stanley Matthews goal.

Three years later, Spurs beat Stoke 1-0 away in the third round.

Spurs were Football League Champions in 1950-51 and beat Stoke 6-1 at home but could only draw 0-0 away during that season.

Every League game played between Spurs and Stoke since WW2 has taken place in the Top Flight, except for season 1977-78 when Spurs spent a single season in Division Two, beating Stoke 3-1 in both matches.

The clubs met in the FA Cup in January 1976 with a 1-1 draw at the Lane followed by a 2-1 win for Stoke in the replay.

Tottenham Hotspur were founder members of the Premier League in 1992-93 but Stoke City's first season in the competition came in 2008-09 with Stoke winning 2-1 at the Britannia Stadium and Spurs winning 3-1 at the Lane.

During 2009-10, Stoke won 1-0 at White Hart Lane with Spurs winning 2-1 at the Britannia.

Last season, Spurs did the "double" over Stoke, winning the away fixture 2-1 with a brace of goals from Gareth Bale and the home fixture 3-2 in April with a brace from Peter Crouch and a Luka Modric goal.

Peter Crouch moved to Stoke City during the summer along with fellow team-mates Jonathan Woodgate and Wilson Palacios, where they joined another former Spurs player, Matthew Ethrington.

Overall, Spurs have won 41 games, Stoke have won 17 games and the remaining 22 matches of the 80 played have been drawn.

Gotta be a result tonight peeps, one way or another. LOL could be a long evening . . . . .

All clubs competing in the Champions League or Europa League enter at this stage and join the Second Round winners (making for a total of 32 clubs).

The ties are single matches, with extra time and a penalty shootout if necessary, with the winners progressing to the next round
