With gaps between the pack narrowing at the top, Sunday’s fixtures are intriguing. United have to cope with a growing injury list at Queens Park Rangers, while later in the day Arsenal visit City. By Ferguson’s assessment, Tottenham’s home game against Martin O’Neill’s Sunderland is just as important in title terms.
“Tottenham were unlucky last Sunday at Stoke but if they win their game in hand they are still in there,” Ferguson said. “For me Spurs have been playing the best football in the Premier league for the last eight games. I have been very impressed with them. They have played some terrific football and they must be contenders now they are out of the Europa League – it will definitely help them in that respect.”
Not a ringing endorsement for United’s continued involvement in European competition this season, especially after a tough draw against Ajax. Yet even if the Europa League is jettisoned, United’s squad has been left thin by a series of injuries.
With a cluster of festive fixtures followed by that FA Cup third-round tie against City, United will need to dig deep before any January recruits arrive. While the loss of Javier Hernández and Nemanja Vidic will be felt deeply, Ferguson does have cover up front and in central defence. It is rather the combined loss of Anderson, Tom Cleverley and Darren Fletcher through injury and illness that will give United problems — especially as Phil Jones will have to step up from the defensive role in which he is most experienced.
