Re: Very Sad News.
Ralph Coates.
It has been confirmed that former Spurs legend Ralph Coates has died at the age of 64 after a short illness.
Ralph
played a total of 248 games for Tottenham scoring 24 goals, including
the only goal in Tottenham`s 1973 League Cup final win over Norwich, but
also picked up a UEFA cup winners medal for our 1972 win over Wolves a
year after his £190,000 move from Burnley.
As a young boy, Ralph
was always one of my favourite Spurs players, famous for his hairstyle
as much as his football ability by many, but as a child this highlighted
him on old black and white TV sets as I watched enthralled as he ran
down the wing in the early 70`s
Ralph left Spurs in 1978 for
Orient, with a brief loan spell in Australia in between, before retiring
in 1980 after a sixteen year career and over six hundred games. For a
number of years, Ralph has been a regular part of Tottenham`s match day
legends and will be greatly missed...

RIP Ralph, good player, good bloke, thoughts at this time with his family and friends. Sad he was taken so young.

The more of these legends that pass away, the
more distant our connection to those magnificent glory days becomes. But
they will never be forgotten. From the eternal league doubles, to
barnstorming cup runs,to Greavsie and Mackay and Danny and White, to
fond, gently tinged memories of glory, from epic Wembley battles fought
in the mud, and won, man for man,to momentous European triumphs on cold,
starry nights composed of dreams that came true and dreams that never
were...thank you Ralphie, and all the others. I remain too young to have
experienced those heady old days, but I know what times they were, and I
am proud of what you have given our club, as I refelct on sad days like
this.

RIP Sir Ralph... first time I ever saw you play was in Pat Jenning's Testimonial at the Lane... true legend!
Thoughts with your family and friends at this time.

Sorry for your loss, R.I.P Ralph.

RIP Ralph Coates. One of the old school. I was
there when he scored that goal at Wembley, and he looked almost
surprised when he scored, such was his self-effacing nature. A proper
gent.
And for those who post on here, remember the guy has just died, and
there's no need for the slang. It happened with Bobby Smith, and again
here. Have a bit of respect.

RIP Ralph Coates - one of the great players of
the team of the early seventies. I have one everlasting memory of
him. The first game I saw him play I was stood immediately behind the
goal at the Paxton Road end and he hit a shot from outside the penalty
area so hard that came straight at me causing me to involuntarily duck.
No problem as the ball ended up in the back of the net. It was one of
the early goals in the 9 - 0 win over Keflavwick of Iceland - first ever
home game in the EUFA Cup.

RIP Ralph. Thanks for the memories you gave
both Burnley and Spurs fans for so many years. The way you played the
game reflected how Spurs + all our fans want to play the game.
I'll never get tired of watching you score + celebrate against Norwich
in the 1973 League Cup final. Just wish I could have met you in person.
Still, what a team we've got "upstairs" now! With Sir Bill Nick as
manager + a classy winger like Ralph Coates in the side, no-one stands a
chance against us!!
COYS!!!!!!!!!

Any one who met or knew Ralph will know what a
nice genuine man he was. My thoughts are with his family on this sad

our great club.

There is ALOT of superstition in football.
Anybody else finding it somewhat weird that these past greats are
passing away in what could be our most momentous year since our last
TRULY momentous year, 50 years ago??... Eddie Bailey, Ralph Coates,
Bobby Smith.....We could truly remember them in the most amazing way,
come the end of the season. I'm sure they will all be doing their bit to
ensure our smoothe passage to Wembley!! COYS, R.I.P each and every
legend that has graced our club and left their presence within every
echo that bounces around The Lane....

sad news often brings back great memories and
one of mine is of watching him running down the wing, his long blonde
combover flowing behind him with the encouraging shouts of " go on
Ralphie my son " from the terraces. RIP Ralphie.
