Don't agree Vis. Clough also took Derby who were a joke when he went there and turned them into 1st division champions. The money he spent at Forest was to keep forest at the top. He had already won the European Cup when Francis was bought. Francis won it for Forest a second time. He also brought players to Derby who weren't household name until he got hold of them. The only player who you could call a top player at Derby was Dave Mackay and he got him for a song. Shrewd buying from Mr Clough. Mackay was the link that made it all work.

I don't understand all this "we need to spend more money" we have spent more than UTD and Arsenal in the last few seasons in fact we are one of the biggest spenders every year. What we don't do is buy the right players as we seem to spend a lot on mediocre and players who after 6 months are just squad players on the bench or out on loan.

If you think of the players we have spent big money on and who are not playing in the 1st team now, like Bentley, Palacios, Gio and others who hardly get a look in like Pav, Keane etc.there is a lot of wasted money there and money we need to get back with sales.
We could so easily raise 40/50 mil then add what Levy will give Harry in the summer and we could get ourselves 3 or 4 top class players.

Sounds simple I know but it's a fact.

Very true Baz, but look at Cloughies spending. Was it a Fashunu brother he spent loads on ? Clough was a wheeler-dealer & spent, at his time, a lot of money . . . . .

I think that was true in the later years Vis but certainly in his early days when Derby and Forest never had a pot to P*ss in he made some very shrewd buys. He was known as a manager who could make silk purses out of Sows ears with players. He took a punt on certain players who other managers wouldn't touch and turned them into World beaters. Hinton and O'hare were two such players as was Roger Davies, Mcgovern, M O'neil, the list goes on. John Robertson was a washed up lump of lard, Brian Clough turned him into a superstar.

I don't doubt it mate but he wasn't the only one. Them days were no different to nowadays. Billy Nick tapped up Jimmy Greaves at a function of some sort. Followed Jim to the bog and asked him if he wanted to come back to England and play for Spurs. The rest as they say is history.
