One win since way back in February is the sort of form that turns you into glue in the equine world. So
why have early-season thoroughbreds Tottenham ended up at the gates of
the knackers yard? Appropriately, it is probably because they are
knackered, mentally as much as physically.
Tottenham have discovered this season just how difficult it is to
be competitive both in the Premier League and the Champions League. We
are spoiled by the perennial adventures of Manchester United, Arsenal
and Chelsea in Europe’s most demanding competition, who simultaneously
maintain their status on the continent with an equally consistent
presence in the domestic top four.Yet look closely at the records
of United and Arsenal, for instance, in the early seasons of the
Champions League, and they tell you such an achievement is not as simple
as it seems. It took United years to master the juggling act and
Arsenal, too, were humiliated in their first three ventures into the
competition we know today. That's because it is so difficult to fine
tune the sort of squad that can handle the demands of both.On the
surface, Spurs have strength in depth, as their bench last night -which
included Defoe, Pienaar, Bassong and Pavlyuchenko - testifies.Yet it is not enough to have good players rotating in and out of the side, especially in your first season at the highest level. You need quality in the team, and equal quality as back-up, and Tottenham don’t yet have that.Their record of recent weeks shows they don’t have an out-and-out goalscorer in their ranks. A man who can turn games. That didn’t matter early in the campaign, when Gareth Bale and Rafael van der Vaart were arguably the form players of Europe. But two players can’t sustain that level on their own and the injuries to both men tell a graphic story.Bale has not been the same since his back injury, and the Dutchman hasn’t hit those heights since the turn of the year.Lose
that sort of inspiration and you end up as the sort of team Tottenham
were last night – one that is talented enough, competent and
well-drilled, but one that is lacking in spark, and with it the
subsequent belief. When they won at City late last season to reach
the Champions League, Spurs looked like they KNEW they could do it.
Last night, they looked simply resigned to their fate. That is what juggling the Premier and Champions Leagues can do to any side – just ask United and Arsenal.
