his ‘stance’ over Modric I guess but then you’d have thought it’s not
rocket science that forcing players to stay when they clearly aren’t
committed to a club isn’t going to improve relations in the dressing
room either.
Worse than that though isn’t just that Levy says he won’t let Modric
go, it’s that he’d previously kidded Modric into believing he would – to
get him to sign an extension. Not that he’ll be owning up to that any
time soon.
Having allegedly been told to sit down, shut up and do as he’s told, Modric though, says “Last
summer (Levy) said we would find a satisfactory agreement if a club
like Chelsea came in. I hope eventually we go our separate ways in an
appropriate manner.”
Despite Levy’s insistence Modric understood the club’s position and
everything would be fine once he got back with his team-mates, Harry
Redknapp has been a bit more realistic, stating “He’s going to
remain here, but there is no point me saying he’s walked in here today
and everything is great, he’s happy and he’s going to stay. The kid is a
bit confused at the moment and it’s not been easy for him. I’d be
telling you lies if I said he’s happy and he doesn’t want to go and play
for whoever wants him – I think there are three or four of the top five
that want him. But we want to keep him here.”
And clearly, Modric isn’t happy because he insists “A lot has
been published in the press about the meeting with Levy, who gave the
public a twisted account of what happened. I must say that I am
genuinely disappointed about what Levy said to me. He didn’t care about
what I was telling him. It all only convinced me further that I was
right to consider moving on to another club.
I reminded the chairman of our gentlemen’s agreement when we were
in Dubrovnik last summer and I agreed a contract extension with
Tottenham. Then I had an open chat with Levy – that if a bigger club
came in with a concrete offer, we would consider it and agree the best
solution for all concerned. The chairman said, ‘OK, we’ll sit and talk
(about any offers)’. Now Levy doesn’t want to talk to me and said there
is no possibility that I can leave Spurs.”
So, what’s the player to do then? Accept Levy is a deceitful moron
and carry on giving his all for Spurs regardless? According to his
public version, that’s exactly what Levy expects because Modric says “He threatened me – he said if I didn’t accept the club’s stance, they would make me sit on the bench or in the stands.”
Like I said, has to be some sort of twat.
