Tottenham Hotspur v West Bromwich Albion Match History 1901 to 2012

Tottenham Hotspur host West Bromwich Albion at White Hart Lane on Saturday 25th August 2012 (KO 15:00) in the 2nd round of Premier League matches of the 2012-13 season.

Spurs lost their opening match 1-2 away to Newcastle United, while the Baggies had a very impressive 3-0 home win against Liverpool. Jermain Defoe scored Tottenham's goal at St James' Park and West Brom's goals came from Zoltan Gera, Peter Odemwingie (penalty) & Romelu Lukaku.

This will be the 140th meeting between the two clubs.

Albion were one of the 12 original members of the Football League in 1888 and the first meeting with Spurs, who were then in the Southern League, came in the 1900-01 FA Cup Semi-Final at Villa Park which Spurs won 4-0 on their way to becoming FA Cup Winners that season.

The teams were drawn together again two seasons later in the first round (today's third round) of the FA Cup and played a 0-0 draw at White Hart Lane before Spurs won the replay at the Hawthorns 2-0.

Tottenham Hotspur joined the Football League in 1908 and lost both Second Division matches to Albion that season 0-3 away and 1-3 at home.
Despite those two defeats, Spurs won promotion to the First Division and Albion joined them for the 1911-12 season. Spurs won the first Top Flight match in September 1-0 at the Lane but the reverse fixture in January was abandoned due to fog. Albion won the re-arranged fixture in March 1912 2-0.

Sandwiched inbetween those League meetings, Albion won a 1st Round FA Cup tie 3-0 in January 1912.

Both clubs continued to meet in Division One for the next three seasons until World War One.

The 1920 Charity Shield was contested between Spurs and Albion at White Hart Lane and the Baggies won 2-0.

From 1921 to 1927, the clubs met regularly in the First Division . They then met for three seasons in Division Two from 1928 to 1931 before regaining their Top Flight status from 1933 to 1935.

The clubs were in the Second Division for the 1938-39 season and Spurs won 4-3 at White Hart Lane in the last match before the outbreak of World War Two in September 1939. The season was abandoned with most clubs having played three matches.

Spurs and Albion met twice during the War in the Football League South resulting in a win apiece.

When League Football resumed after WW2, both clubs were in the Second Division and Spurs won the League in 1949-50 with Albion finishing Runners-Up.

The 1950-51 season saw both clubs back in Division One and Spurs did the "double" over Albion, winning 2-1 at the Hawthorns and 5-0 at the Lane, on the way to Tottenham Hotspur's first Top Flight League Championship.

Every League meeting between the two clubs since 1950-51 has taken place in the Top Flight.

The first Football League Cup meeting came in October 1970 with Spurs winning 5-0 with a hat-trick from Martin Peters and a brace from Alan Gilzean. There have been four meetings in the competition to date with Spurs winning three games and one match drawn.

Tottenham Hotspur were founder members of the Premier League in 1992-93 and are one of seven ever-present clubs in the competition.
West Bromwich Albion were promoted to the Premier League for the 2002-03 season and this is their seventh season.

Spurs won both matches in 2002-03 with goals from Christian Ziege, Robbie Keane and Gus Poyet securing a 3-1 win at the Lane while a brace from Keane and a Teddy Sheringham goal saw Spurs win 3-2 at the Hawthorns.

Both matches in the 2004-05 season ended in 1-1 draws, Jermain Defoe scoring away and Keane scoring at home. The clubs also met in the FA Cup fourth round that season with a 1-1 draw at the Hawthornes followed by a 3-1 win at White Hart Lane.

Honours were even in 2005-06 with Albion winning 2-0 at the Hawthorns and Spurs winning 2-1 at the Lane.

The 2008-09 season saw similar results with Albion winning 2-0 at the Hawthorns and Spurs winning 1-0 at the Lane.

The 2010-11 game at the Hawthorns in September 2010 resulted in a 1-1 draw. Luka Modric scored Spurs' goal only for Chris Brunt to equalise in the 41st minute.

The reverse fixture at the Lane in April 2011 resulted in a 2-2 draw. Peter Odemwingie put West Brom ahead after 5 minutes but goals from Roman Pavlyuchenko and Jermain Defoe put Spurs ahead. Simon Cox scored the late equaliser.

Last season's game at the Hawthorns in November resulted in a 3-1 win for Spurs. Youssouf Mulumbu's header put the Baggies ahead after 10 minutes but Emmanuel Adebayor equalised 15 minutes later and the teams went into the halftime break level at 1-1. Second half goals from Jermain Defoe 9 minutes from time and a second Adebayor goal deep into stoppage time gave Spurs the three points, even if the score was somewhat flattering in a hard-fought match.

Jermain Defoe scored a goal in the 63rd minute at White Hart Lane to give Spurs the Double over West Brom.

Both clubs started the 2012-13 season with new managers. André Villas-Boas replaced Harry Redknapp at Spurs and Steve Clarke replaced Roy Hodgson at West Bromwich Albion.

Overall, matches played between the two clubs are slightly in Tottenham's favour with 56 wins to Albion's 54 and the remaining 29 of the 139 matches played so far ending in draws.

    TEAM NEWS

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen is set to make his debut as Younes Kaboul is ruled out with a knee injury.

Emmanuel Adebayor is set to start following the completion of his transfer from Man City on Tuesday.

West Brom's Graham Dorrans may be available as his daughter continues to make steady progress in her recovery from meningitis in hospital.

Aside from Dorrans, manager Steve Clarke has a fully fit squad to choose from.
    MATCH PREVIEW

These two clubs suffered contrasting emotions on an opening day of the season that threw up more than its fair share of surprises.

Andre Villas-Boas lost his first game in charge of Tottenham at Newcastle, while Steve Clarke saw his new charges at West Brom enjoy the result of the weekend with a superb 3-0 win over Liverpool.

There were fears that in the post-Roy Hodgson era West Brom could struggle, but on the evidence of game one their achievement in finishing 11th and 10th in the last two seasons could be matched - or even bettered.
Defeat to West Brom last season was the final nail in the coffin of Andre Villas-Boas's ill-fated spell at Chelsea, and while another beating by the Baggies would certainly not result in a P45 in the post, alarm bells would start to ring for some Spurs fans already unconvinced by his appointment.

However, there is a feeling that until the transfer saga involving the departure of Luka Modric, and the arrival of his potential replacement(s), the club's season cannot properly begin.

The brinkmanship employed by chairman Daniel Levy over transfer fees and negotiations has brought impressive financial returns for the club over the years, but there has always been a sense that there drawn out nature has often left the club short on the field.

How Spurs could have done with striker Emanuel Adebayor at St James' Park but at least AVB can call on him now after his transfer from Manchester City was finally concluded in midweek.
    MATCH FACTS

    Head-to-head

Tottenham completed the double over West Brom last season, winning 3-1 at the Hawthorns and 1-0 at White Hart Lane.
The Baggies have only won two of 12 Premier League matches against Tottenham.
West Brom's last win at White Hart Lane was a 3-2 victory in November 1984.
This is the 135th meeting between the sides. Tottenham have won 53, West Brom 52 and there have been 29 draws.

    Tottenham

Tottenham dropped only 15 points out of 57 at home last season having won 13, drawn three and lost three.
Andre Villas-Boas has now won just three of his last 13 Premier League matches (12 of those in charge of Chelsea, one with Tottenham).
By giving away a penalty against Newcastle, Spurs matched the number of penalties they conceded in the whole of the last league season.

    West Brom

West Brom started last season with four defeats in their opening five league matches, but got off to a flier this season with a superb 3-0 win over Liverpool.
Until that victory over Liverpool, West Brom had not won any of their last 13 opening day matches in the top-flight, stretching back to August 1978.
West Brom won seven away matches in the league last season. In five previous seasons in the Premier League they had managed a total of just 10 away victories.

Good start to the game then things evened out a bit. Should have scored at least one by now. I like what I'm seeing in the style of build up play. Agree with you Lought. Sandro is enough to cover the back 4. Maybe Livermore off & Siggy on? Maybe also look at Adabaddabdab for Defoe after around 65/70 minutes if it's still 0-0 . . . . .

lucky not to lose in that last 20 mins.
what a differnce that sub made compared to our lazy selfish strikers.

im soz but defoe needs to go. he had so many chances to lay players off in better postion buy had a greedy shot.

to think we ended the game with jenas galas and jake says everything.

oh and hell boy just cant move

1st 20 mins we looked great, could have scored 2 goals, then after the 20 mins, we just stopped playing, became lazy and lacked any creativity, maybe they ran out of steam. But at home we should play the 4-4-2 diamond formation, adebayor should of started up front with defoe and i would of dropped VDV who was ineffective. should of started Siggy instead of Livermore. It seems AVB doesnt know the squad that well, he should look at how Harry use to play the boys. We need at least 2 more signings, playmaker & striker before the window shuts. Levy get the cheque book out asap.

just got back from game, we were awful.1st half wba were happy just to soak up any threat we had. says it all when someone creative like thud goes out on loan yet we keep jenas. to me he made the wrong sub taking off sandro, it should have been livermore.also what was wrong with our two goals we scored were they offsides? and were they correct decisions? both jan and siggy played very well imo.bad bad result really today.some booing at the end im afraid to report.

both offside goals the players started in offside postion then came back on side. thought they was a bit harsh as thats what rvp does and hardly ever gets called ofside.
