Firstly, I want to make it clear that I do not for a minute want to belittle Everton's deserved 4th place finish in 2004/5 in any way. I just want to point out some facts that seem to have been overlooked by many.

A number of rival fans seem to be questioning why Harry Redknapp deserves the Manager of the Year award when, on the face of it, David Moyes achieved the same success with Everton in 2004/5 and did not receive the award. I suggest there are a number of reasons: Everton finished the 2004/5 season with a total of 61 points and a negative goal difference (-1). They were 34 points adrift of league winners Chelsea and were actually closer to the team in LAST place (29 point gap to Southampton in 20th).

A win on Sunday will see Everton finish the season with a superior record to that of their 2004/5 team (they currently have 58 points and a +10 goal difference) and will finish... 8th. Indeed, their points haul of 61 would only have been sufficient for a top four finish in two of the last ten Premier League seasons. Spurs, on the other hand, have amassed 70 points with a (winnable) game to spare and have a healthy +28 goal difference. A points haul of 73 would have been sufficient for a top four finish in all but one of the last ten seasons.

Indeed it would have achieved two 3rd place finishes and a 2nd in that time. Whilst Everton's was certainly a notable achievement in 2004/5, it could be argued that they scraped into the top four due to being the least inconsistent of a relatively poor chasing pack that year.

Spurs have forced their way in there on their own merit in what has been one of the most competitive seasons in recent times. Not only do I think that this goes some way to illustrating why Harry thoroughly deserves his award in what has been a remarkable season for Spurs, it also gives me a lot of hope that our side are made of tougher stuff than the Toffees' one that faded away so markedly in the wake of their own 4th place finish. The proof, or otherwise, of this will only be seen when we look at what we manage to achieve next season. I, for one, can't wait. COYS
