Roman Pavlyuchenko's deflected drive on the hour gave Tottenham a narrow win against a young Town side at Portman Road.

Reggie Lambe went closest for Blues with a strike tipped over by Ben Alnwick, the 'keeper then denying the Bermuda international with his outstretched foot in a keenly contested game in front of 5000 fans at Portman Road.

Ledley King saw action for the first time since a groin injury sidelined him at this summer's World Cup, the England international lining up alongside Younes Kaboul in a strong Spurs' rearguard.

Pavlyuchenko was denied by the feet of Arran Lee-Barrett in the first 10 minutes, the Tottenham frontman, on his way back from injury, seeing another effort parried by the Town 'keeper soon after.

Lee Martin had Blues' first effort of note, his free-kick deflected almost into the path of Troy Brown but Alnwick prised the ball away from the defender's feet.

Lee-Barrett was quickly off his line after a short backpass almost let in Pavlyuchenko, the 'keeper using his feet to good effect again.

Alnwick saved well from Ronan Murray at his nearpost just before the break as the half ended goalless. King was replaced at the break, Town also making a change with Billy Clark on for Colin Healy, the midfielder returning after injury.

Pavlyuchenko volleyed into the sidenetting from the angle as the second-half got underway with Spurs looking the more likely to score and it was the Russia international who finally broke the deadlock just past the hour, his effort from 20 yards taking a big deflection to leave Lee-Barrett wrong-footed.

Jon Stead and Pablo Counago were immediately introduced, Stead almost getting on the end of Jamie Griffiths' cross, Lambe then denied by Alnwick.

Lee-Barrett beat out a long range drive from Dean Parrott but Town had a gilt edged chance to equaliser late on when Counago fed Lambe but he couldn't find the net from 10 yards.

Wonder why pav was kept at home, maybe something to do with his recent injury? Or harry's still looking to cash in.

He'd be in my starting eleven for the city match.
