It is with great regret that we announce the death of Eddie Baily, our former coach and renowned inside-forward from our 1951 Championship-winning side.Eddie died at a Welwyn Garden City hospital this morning following a short illness. He was 85.Born at Clapton, East London, Eddie was one of the most important names in our post-war history. He started with us as a schoolboy and rose through the ranks at White Hart Lane to make his first team debut in January, 1947.He signed as a full professional in the following October and quickly established himself in the side. He was soon recognised as one of the game's finest inside-forwards, a player with superb skill, vision and goalscoring prowess. He was a key component in our ‘Push-and-Run' side as we won the Second and First Division Championships in successive seasons and was rewarded with an England call-up, going on to win nine caps. After 325 League and Cup appearances, scoring 69 goals, he moved to Port Vale in 1956 but returned to Spurs in October, 1963, as assistant manager to his former team mate Bill Nicholson for the next 11 years. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of Eddie Baily at this very sad time.
