Memories of the ‘Famous Five’ and Rocket Ronnie

by Matthew Harris on June 2, 2011

One of the most memorable seasons in recent times just has to be
1994/95: It was a crazy year in many ways and one which saw Jurgen
Klinsmann arrive and the advent of a bizarre 4-1-5 formation.
There are many great memories from that season and one of these took
place at the Dell, where mutual loathing between Southampton and Spurs
fans was still a few years away. After a disappointing 1-1 draw in the
first game of this fifth round FA Cup tie, Spurs travelled to the South
Coast to try to finish the game off.
It rather epitomised our season that Darren Anderton tried to score
from the kick off but the game became known as Ronny Rosenthal’s match
after the likeable Israeli international scored a stunning hat trick.
Teddy Sheringham said afterwards that he should occupy the top three
slots in the Goal of the Month contest.
While Ronny rightly deserved all the plaudits, he did overshadow an
attacking display that was typical of our season – Anderton, Sheringham
and Nick Barmby scored the other goals in a 6-2 win. Lovers of the game
as a whole would also enjoy some comedy keeping from Bruce Grobbelaar on
    the last goal.
So was this the best memory from the mad season that was 1994/95 or are there finer moments that you can recall?

I have to say that the man city fa cup final stays in my mind , and the performance of villa, from zero to hero in the replay, and that mazy run must he did must rate as one of the best goals in fa cup history, shame the the competition hasnt the same kudos anymore.

I was at the Saturday game and the Thursday night game. The Sat game was awful. The replay was full of excitement and expectation.

I did not realise that Grobbelaar went to Southampton, I thought he got done by the FA for taking bribes while at Liverpool and that was the end of his career. I wonder how much he got for our sixth goal?.

It's so hard to pick a favourite game there have been so many, but I will go for the Leicester City Cup Final in 60-61 that gave us the double. A game I can not remember very clearly except for one reason was against Newcastle at the Lane, I do not know if it was cup or league but I think we won, but in this game the crowd saw one of the greatest save's ever by our Pat Jennings, that was when we had standing in the ground, and all those in the stand's stood up with those of us already standing and we all applauded Pat for something like two minutes, what a save and what a keeper. I thought he was better than Gordon Banks, what do you think, and can anyone remember this Newcastle game?.

soz thats a bit before my time.
my favorite spurs goal was gazza free kick. what it meant. and what a goal..

favorite spurs game ill need to have a think about that.
i do remember another game where we was losing at home to southampton 1 0 at half time even though we was all over them.

anway 2nd half 56mins gone and we scored. 57 mins we scored again and again on 58 and again on 59.
sheringham got 2 barmby and anderton. then that thug hurt barmby and he went off injurid and the game ended.

but that great spurs run started away on a cold january at norwich and we won 2 0 and went on a winning streak

Going up to Hillsboro to see Spurs beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-4 on the opening day of the season, was a great day , that was the game with the Klinsmann dive goal celebration...

Then Ossies last game in charge beating the Spammers 3-1 at WHL was good but we all knew by then that Sugar had made his mind up about replacing the Legend ...

The one game that stands out for me though was away to Liverpool in the 6th round, winning 1-2 with a last minute Jurgen goal ..... We remained in the Anfield Road End celebrating for a good 20 minutes after the game ....

I just remembered, and seriously it dishonours the great memory of a man who took the role of my father who died when i was 6 years old.

I said the best game i remember was that great cup final against man city, and it will always remain in my memory.

My great friend who died in 1991, took me as a birthday present to see the relegation game against leeds united 28th april .. 1975......what a game with alfie conn gunning a great leeds side down....4-2, alfie was fantastic, what a performer and entertainer...we stayed up.....and i was there, with a great family friend who regarded me as a son.

Sorry lads, thats my game, the cup final runs it close, but that leeds game will always remain with me to the day i die.

Ah, Alfie Conn Lew. Not a prolific scorer but he scored some pretty important goals for us.

I remember that night Lew I was there too. The goal of the match if I remember rightly was the Cyril Knowles free kick from about 30 yards out. It flew over the wall and straight into the net. If he had been a Brazilian everyone would have raved about it. It went like an Excocet Missile lol.

Alfie Conn anyone remember him sitting on the ball at Highbury ? I think thats what made him such a crowd favourite despite his short stay.

That Leeds game, I saw that and honestly thought that was our lot, I could not see us beating them. I can not remember now but did we have to win or would a draw have been good enough?. I think Terry Neil was manager.
