One of the most memorable seasons in recent times just has to be
1994/95: It was a crazy year in many ways and one which saw Jurgen
Klinsmann arrive and the advent of a bizarre 4-1-5 formation.
There are many great memories from that season and one of these took
place at the Dell, where mutual loathing between Southampton and Spurs
fans was still a few years away. After a disappointing 1-1 draw in the
first game of this fifth round FA Cup tie, Spurs travelled to the South
Coast to try to finish the game off.
It rather epitomised our season that Darren Anderton tried to score
from the kick off but the game became known as Ronny Rosenthal’s match
after the likeable Israeli international scored a stunning hat trick.
Teddy Sheringham said afterwards that he should occupy the top three
slots in the Goal of the Month contest.
While Ronny rightly deserved all the plaudits, he did overshadow an
attacking display that was typical of our season – Anderton, Sheringham
and Nick Barmby scored the other goals in a 6-2 win. Lovers of the game
as a whole would also enjoy some comedy keeping from Bruce Grobbelaar on
the last goal.
So was this the best memory from the mad season that was 1994/95 or are there finer moments that you can recall?
