Van der Vaart: Spurs have a great chance of achieving something if Modric stays

Rafael van der Vaart is pleading with Tottenham to keep Luka Modric and feels they have enough quality to challenge for major silverware next season.

Modric is keen to secure a big money move to Chelsea and has reportedly handed in a transfer request, but the north London club are determined to keep him at White Hart Lane.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is adamant that the Croatian midfielder is not for sale at any price and will block any move to sell him.

And van der Vaart has backed Levy's stance, admitting the club need to keep Modric if they are to stand any chance of breaking back into the top four and can challenge the big teams in Europe.

Van der Vaart said: "He is a great player and the way he played last season, it is normal that a big club wants to buy him.

"We want to keep him and we are hoping that he is going to stay. We also know it is difficult but we will be much stronger if Luka stays.

"The manager has said that the Premier League is so hard and there are a lot of good teams but if we can play like we did last season and have a little more luck, than we can achieve something.

"We have a big squad with a lot of quality and if someone gets injured we have someone else who can play. There is no problem. If Luka stays we have a good chance."
