Harry Redknapp admits that Rafael van der Vaart is winning his personal
battle with Jermain Defoe within the Tottenham squad after the Dutchman
scored his fifth goal in four games yesterday.
Van der Vaart opened the scoring for the fourth league game in a row
against Blackburn, and struck again in the second half to secure a 2-1
win at Ewood Park.
Defoe has also started the campaign in fine form, with five goals in 11
games in all competitions – four of those matches being as a substitute.
However, Redknapp admits that he is unlikely to name both players in his
starting line-up, and the manager says that Van der Vaart is almost
impossible to drop in his current form.
“As I keep saying, it’s a difficult decision,” said the Spurs boss.
“I’ve got Adebayor to play up front and someone to play off him.
“There’s Rafa and I’ve got Jermain Defoe as well, who was in great form.
He’s very unlucky not to be in the team at the moment, but Rafa’s got
five goals in four games. You can’t ask more than that.
“He’s a class finisher, a clinical goalscorer. He did it last year, he
came in here and suddenly scored goals week in week out. I’ve said this
year he’s capable of getting 20 goals, he could be right up there with
the top scorers.”
Meanwhile, Van der Vaart says that Redknapp is reaping the rewards of playing him in his favourite position behind the striker.
“Of course that’s my preferred position, I’ve played my whole career
there,” he said. “If the manager wants to play somewhere else then you
have to do it, but just behind the striker I can score my goals, give
some passes. I’m happy there.
“I feel I’m playing better and better. I came back after injury and, in
the beginning, you’re always trying to find your rhythm. I scored but I
didn’t play my best game. This was much better and I feel better every
day. I’m 100 per cent now.
“We’re happy with this result because you always know before the game that it’s difficult.
“They [Blackburn] don’t play the best football. They play with long
balls, corner kicks and throw-ins, and they are really dangerous at
that. It was very difficult, we didn’t play our best game but we won.
“We’re really confident. Last week we drew in Newcastle and we were really disappointed, and that means everything.
“We know we can win every game, especially when we play our game, when we play good football.”
