    TEAM NEWS

Tottenham are without Gareth Bale after the winger picked up his fifth booking of the season to trigger a one-match ban.

Clint Dempsey will again be on the bench, and he may be joined by the returning Benoit Assou-Ekotto.
Reading boss Brian McDermott could stick with the same starting line-up for the third game running.

Jason Roberts is struggling with a hip injury and is unlikely to play, along with long-term absentee Alex McCarthy.
    MATCH PREVIEW

A look at the league table from this stage last season shows that Tottenham sat third under Harry Redknapp on New Year's Day. They enter 2013 in fourth under Andre Villas-Boas and the Portuguese manager must be delighted with the progress his new side have made since his summer arrival in north London. He has even managed to get the previously sceptical Spurs fans behind him.
Tottenham have won six out of their last eight league games and it should really have been seven if they had not conceded two goals in injury time to lose to Everton.

In fact, no side has conceded more late goals than Spurs, which must disappoint AVB. They have let in nine in the last 10 minutes of matches, but in a weird quirk they are the only club yet to concede in the opening 15 minutes of any Premier League match this season.

They will have no Gareth Bale, though, against Reading as the flying Welsh winger is suspended after receiving that controversial booking for simulation against Sunderland.

The Royals will take comfort from that, and from the fact that Tottenham have looked fallible at times at White Hart Lane this season, having dropped points to Wigan, Norwich, West Brom and Stoke.

Brian McDermott's side appear to have turned the corner after a disastrous set of results. Their defence has tightened up dramatically and back-to-back clean sheets and a haul of four points represents a great Christmas for the club.

But they remain rooted in the bottom three and it is crucial they keep up this momentum to try and haul themselves out of the relegation zone.
    MATCH FACTS

    Head-to-head

Spurs are unbeaten in their last six league and cup games against Reading.
Reading have never won in eight previous visits to White Hart Lane.
They have conceded 24 goals in those eight matches - including six on their last league visit on 29 December 2007 when they lost an extraordinary match 6-4.

    Tottenham

Tottenham have suffered only two defeats in their last 20 Premier League games in the month of December (W12 D6 L2).
Spurs have taken 19 points from a possible 24 in their last eight league games.
Andre Villas-Boas' side are the only Premier League team to score in every away game this season.

    Reading

The Royals' win over West Ham was only their second victory of the season and they have now kept back-to-back clean sheets for the first time this season.
It was their first win in nine matches.
Striker Pavel Pogrebnyak goal drought, which had lasted for seven hours and 58 minutes, ended against the Hammers.

Strong line-up. I expect most of the wide play will go through Lennon. However a more measured, patient build-up could help us break down Readings defence which I expect to sit deep and look to soak up pressure. It's time for Adabadback to put a shift in as well . . . . .
