Aston Villa League Cup 3rd Round Empty Re: Aston Villa League Cup 3rd Round

Post by vis Wed Sep 25 2013, 02:28

The hip injury suffered by Christian Benteke against Norwich is being assessed but the Villa forward will not feature against Tottenham.

Libor Kozak is likely to make his first start but Gabby Agbonlahor, Fabian Delph, Ashley Westwood, Antonio Luna and Ciaran Clark are all injury doubts.

Spurs head coach Andre Villas-Boas will rotate his squad, with defender Vlad Chiriches in line for his debut.

However, striker Jermain Defoe is a doubt because of a groin strain.

    MATCH PREVIEW
Tottenham head coach Andre Villas-Boas argued last week that the scheduling of this match - his team's third in six days - was "putting the players' careers at risk".

It is likely the Portuguese will rest many of the side that won at Cardiff on Sunday, but the quality of his squad runs deep - a fact illustrated by the option to bring in club record signing Erik Lamela at Villa Park.

Villa have no such luxury. Paul Lambert could be missing up to 10 players, with Saturday's league win at Norwich coming at the cost of injuries to key men Christian Benteke and Gabby Agbonlahor.

Libor Kozak proved an able deputy for Benteke with the winner at Carrow Road and he seems to have a liking for cup competition, having finished as the Europa League top scorer last season with 10 goals in 11 games for Lazio. Villa will need him to continue in that vein if they are to earn an all-too rare home win against top-flight opposition.
    MATCH FACTS
    Head-to-head

The two clubs have met four times in the League Cup, with Aston Villa winning on the last two occasions in 1987 and 1994.
Spurs are unbeaten in their last five trips to Villa - all in the Premier League (W3, D2). They won 4-0 on their last visit on Boxing Day.

    Aston Villa

Villa have scored an unsurpassed 17 goals in the League Cup since the start of last season. Christian Benteke and Andreas Weimann have each scored five of those goals.
They have won eight of their last nine League Cup matches at Villa Park, but lost three of their last five home matches at this stage of the competition.
The Villans have won this competition five times, latterly in 1996.

    Tottenham

Tottenham have won seven of their eight league and cup ties this season.
They have only conceded one goal to date - Olivier Giroud's winner for Arsenal.
Spurs have won seven of their last nine third-round ties.
The Lilywhites have won five of their last six third-round away fixtures in the League Cup, drawing the other and scoring 19 goals in the process.

Aston Villa League Cup 3rd Round _70101823_defoeafp

Jermain Defoe scored twice as Tottenham powered past Aston Villa and into the fourth round of the Capital One Cup.

The England striker set Spurs on their way by glancing home Lewis Holtby's clever pass, before completing the victory with a late finish.

Paulinho and Nacer Chadli were also on the scoresheet as Tottenham dominated.

However, Villa should have been awarded a penalty early in the second half when Nicklas Helenius was impeded by Jan Vertonghen.

    More to follow.
