FC Sheriff Tiraspol (Russian: ФК Шериф Тирасполь, known simply as Sheriff) is an association football club located in Tiraspol, Transnistria (Moldova). The club had dominated Moldovan football since 2001, winning twelve championship title in the Moldovan National Division out of thirteen in this time frame.

FC Sheriff Tiraspol is based in Tiraspol, the capital of the breakaway state of Transnistria, generally recognized as part of Moldova. The club plays in the Divizia Naţională, the top division in Moldovan football. The club was founded by the Sheriff security company on 4 April 1997, who remains a key sponsor.

The club was officially refounded under the leadership of Victor Gushan (the company's president). The first Sheriff coach, Ahmad Alaskarov (who was as a coach in the old Soviet Supreme League), was charged with leading the team to the Moldovan top division.

Sheriff's first football trophy was the 1998–99 Moldovan Cup. The club won promotion to the top flight in 1998, after its first-ever season, and dominated the Moldovan National Division with ten consecutive titles from 2001 to 2010, winning an eleventh in 2012. The side also have seven Moldovan Cup titles, including six double-winning seasons. However, the club has never reached the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.

The club was founded in 1997 by former cop Viktor Gushan, and employee of the Sheriff in Moldova. The club entered the second tier of Moldovan football, the "A" Division later that year and won its championship by 14 points to gain promotion to National Division. The club won its first major silver with the 1999 Moldovan Cup. In the final at the Republican Stadium, Sheriff scored an injury-time equaliser before winning the match against Constructorul Chisinau 2–1 after extra time. Sheriff's first National Division title came in the 2000–01 season, which also included their second Moldovan Cup triumph as they beat Nistru Otaci on penalties after a goalless match. The league triumph was the first of a run of ten consecutively up to 2010, also including league-cup doubles in 2002, 2006 and 2008–10. Sheriff won each Moldovan Super Cup from 2004 to 2010, but did not have to play a match on four occasions due to winning it on default through a double. Sheriff were denied an eleventh successive title by Dacia Chişinău in 2010–11, but reclaimed the title the following season.

The team won the Commonwealth of Independent States Cup in 2003 and 2009, becoming the first team from Moldova to win an international title. Sheriff were the first club in Moldova to sign contract players from Brazil and Africa.

Emmanuel Adebayor is in line for his first Tottenham appearance of the season in the Europa League meeting with Sheriff Tiraspol in Moldova.

Striker Adebayor had been training with the reserves after turning down chances to leave the club in the summer.

But he could start on Thursday, as could winger Aaron Lennon after he recovered from a foot injury.

Etienne Capoue (ankle), Danny Rose (toe) and Younes Kaboul (adductor) remain on the sidelines.

Right-back Kyle Walker, winger Andros Townsend and midfielder Paulinho have been rested.

Tiraspol is capital of the breakaway state of Transnistria, which has its own passports, currency, police, army and border guards but is considered part of Moldova.

"For this moment, we consider ourselves to be the main force in Moldova in terms of football," said Sheriff manager Veaceslav Rusnac, whose side have won their domestic title 12 times in the past 13 seasons.

"Our results speak for us because in the last years we almost always become champions and every time we are in European competition it helps us.

"Probably there are areas in Europe that think we have a lot of vodka and bears, but it is not so.

"In terms of football and working in football, there are not too many places in the former USSR that have such conditions."

Clinical performance. Sheriff are a classic counter attacking team. They broke well but the clean sheet proves we dealt with them. What luck? Every threat was dealt with and the offsides were clear offsides so that ain't luck! Have to watch them at The Lane, it will suit Sheriff more being the away team. So often in the past people have asked why Spurs don't kill games like this off? Well tonight we did. It's interesting to watch this squad & it's style evolving. Teams are packing midfield to try and stiffle us and we are learning to show guile & paitence to overcome this. I'm more then happy with the performance tonight . . . .

Europa League Away Game Vs Sheriff Tiraspol _70693924_70693922

Tottenham Hotspur moved a step closer to the Europa League knockout stages with a hard-earned victory away to Sheriff Tiraspol in Moldova.

Jan Vertonghen's header from Christian Eriksen's cross set Spurs on their way.

Vlad Chiriches produced a superb clearance to deny Henrique Luvannor an equaliser before Aaron Lennon hit a post on his first start for two months.

Jermain Defoe's deflected shot doubled the lead as Spurs made it three wins in three games in Group K.

The England international's 75th-minute strike moved him level with Martin Chivers's club record of 22 European goals.

Having disposed of Norway's Tromso and Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala without conceding a goal, Spurs knew a third group victory would confirm their place in the last 32 - if Anzhi's home clash with Tromso ended level.

It did not, but Anzhi's 1-0 win means Tottenham will reach the knockout stages if they defeat Sheriff at White Hart Lane on 7 November.

Villas-Boas will hope it is a more comfortable experience than the one he endured at the Sheriff Stadium.

The champions of Moldova have not won a group game in Europe for three years and must have feared the worst when Vertonghen beat captain Miral Samardzic in the air to power Eriksen's 12th-minute cross home, the Belgian's first goal since March.

Yet Vertonghen spent the rest of the half at the other end of the pitch as Sheriff put the Spurs defence under intense pressure.

The hosts would have been level in the 15th minute but for a superb piece of defending by Chiriches, the Romania international denying Luvannor an equaliser after the Brazilian rounded Hugo Lloris and rolled the ball towards an empty net.

Cadu, another Brazilian, had a goal ruled out for offside, Ismail Isa flashed the ball across the face of goal and Luvannor fired over the bar as the home side continued to press.

And there were anxious faces on the Spurs bench when Isa went down in the penalty area under a challenge from Sandro.

But Tottenham survived on a night when the result outweighed the performance - and it might have been more comfortable for Villas-Boas had Lennon marked his first start since the opening weekend of the season with a goal, twice going close to doubling Spurs' lead.

Defoe's goal confirmed the victory, though, and the Londoners reach the midway point of the group stage with a 100% record and yet to concede a goal.

wow why do we play so poor in this competion. players are fighting for a first team spot

lamela is so far from the first team right now. he kept losing it.

    lloris 7
chirch7 love the way he brings the ball out.
naution7 decent display at right back.
    verts 7 for the goal.
fryers 7 extra point because he was out of postion
dembela 7 kept the ball well
sandro 6 he looks off the pace
    lennon6 decent in spells.
erikson 8 best player. always looking to make things happen
lamela3 awfull. got bit better on the right side then avb took him off
defoe6 4 shots 2 really tame shot and a hit and hope for the goal.

every europa game this season we been poor because of defoe upfront on hes own. he cant link up play. its not hes fault. hes not that type of player.

thought chadi done well when he came on.
its the result that means more then the performance.
now we can rest players when we get loads of games in november,

Makes me laugh how these teams, some champions of their own Countries are supposed to roll over and lay down when Spurs come to town. We put on professional displays miles away from home, keep clean sheets, rest our most current influential players and it's still not good enough, fickle, nah not Spurs.

How do forum members think we would get on against Celtic? Reckon we would thump 'em? Well guess what Tripasol are the Moldovan equivilent of Celtic. The richest, biggest fish in a small pond. We win 0-2. Yup fek me a clean sheet. Still that ain't enough. Fringe players get a run out and the squad gets rotated and that ain't enough! We close a tricky game off and get the result and that ain't enough! Maybe people are missing Bales rampaging runs & goals but allegedly he wasn't good enough and made us a one man team! And shouldn't have played in these type of games anyway! Oh but Johnny Gone -A-Longtimeago would have been so much better. Yup but he went he a long time ago. 3 games, 7 goals scored, 0 conceded and thousand's of air miles clocked up. Great experiences for the fans & players but we didn't win 10-0 or lose to an unluckly bad reffed 5-4 so a poor display? Get a grip peeps this ia a new era and the game & team has changed . . . . . . .

What like Arsenal and Cheatski, did they get 3 up? Don't you get it Lought, we play within ourselves, making sure we don't pick up stupid injuries and get through this stage and play our full strength team and put in the effort when it really counts when the decent teams are left. The management are doing what they are paid to do, pick the team for the job in hand, so far we have lost 2 games in 14 games in all comps and all you doubters are saying we have been lucky and we will be found out, could it be the slowly, but surley AVB are doing what they are paid to do, manage a squad of players.
