Greatest Spurs team EVER Empty Greatest Spurs team EVER

Post by Guest Thu May 20 2010, 07:36

I think we've probably done this before but as it's quiet on here at the mo let's try again. This is with thanx to Baz for stirring a few memories. What is your greatest ever Spurs team ? Players that you have seen since supporting the club. We should get a fair amount of difference with the age ranges across posters so here I go with mine (lol correct at time of posting - by next week I may have changed my mind) . . . . . . . .
I'm going for the classic 4-4-2 and my period starts about 1971/72, but in truth isn't clearly remembered until the mid, late '70's but this does allow me some 'artistic license'. I've also allowed myself the modern trend of 7 substitutes . . . . ..

GK - Pat Jennings : Man oh man what mighty large hands, Gomes was a close call TBH such is how highly I rate him. but Big Pat is a true Spurs legend
RB - Steve Perryman : Mr Tottenham himself. What more can I add
CB - Graham Roberts : To add some real steel to my back four. Watch out he'll bite ya
CB - Ledley King : Possibley the most naturally gifted defender of his generation
LB - Gareth Bale : Left backs are hard to pick for us. Cyril I suppose but our Gareth deserves his slot
RM - Aaron Lennon : When he's on his game just awesome
CM - Paul Gascoinge : Pure brilliance
CM - Glenn Hoddle : Pure genius
LM - David Ginola : Because he's worth it
ST - Clive Allen : Just a great goal scorer
ST - Gary Lineker : Another natural born scorer (lol not sure how hard my front 2 would work but with my midfield they would just have to score)
    Subs -
Heurelho Gomes - Almost as good as Big Pat IMO
Gary Mabbutt - A gentleman & superb footballer
Richard Gough - Scottish steel at it's finest
Chris Waddle - The WadFather, lazy & slow looking but looks can be deceptive
Luka Modric - The new Moddle
Alan Gilzean - Only just remember him but what I do remember was good
Jurgen Klinsmann - Jurgen the German was a true legend
Manager - Sir Bill Nicholson (used me 1971 artistic license here again) & as his assistant Keith Burkinshaw as probably the most succesfull, in terms of trophies and playing style, manager I have seen at Spurs to date . . . . ..

CB Graham roberts. power and was so brave
    CB Ledley king
    rb Stephen carr
    LM chris waddlw
    CM HODDLE
    CM GAZZA
RM ANDERTON. i really think when he was 19 20 hes all round game was better then lennons.

GK Pat Jennings. He could catch the ball with one hand let alone two. And for a big man was so agile.
LB Gareth Bale. His attacking from the left back position is a great asset to have in your team.
CB. For me there is no doubt. It would be Big Mike England. He was rough tough and didn't give a sh*t. A very hard man.
CB Ledley King. An aristocratic defender He would be perfect with England by his side. Where Mike had the Brawn Ledders has the brain too.
RB. Stevie Perryman. A great defender with lots of spirit and a very intelligent footballer too. Great tackler and a great passer of the ball.
LM David Ginola. What a legend he is. Yes he could be lazy at times but on his day he could win the match.
CM Hoddle. He had everything...OK he didn't tackle but he could take players on and had a pass to die for. Plus he could score great goals.
CM Surprisingly I am going for Alan Mullery AKA the tank. The man was hard as nails he would be the perfect foil for Hoddle. Mullery was a ball winner. He could also pass the ball and scored some important goals. He would also be my Captain.
RM. Aaron Lennon. His pace is a killer and now he is getting the final ball in more often it just adds to his game.
CF James Greaves. An absolute legend. What this man did for Spurs over the years in front of goal is purely phenomenal. He could dribble like a winger, pass like a playmaker and score goals for fun. Which I am sure he did at times.
CF A very hard one this but I would give it to Alan Gilly Gizean. Simply because the partnership he forged with Greaves bordered on the psychic. They instinctively knew where the other was. They scored a lot of goals and Gilzean was a master of the flick header.

    SUBS

Gomes. He has proved what he can do.
Ray Evans. Good at RB. Not many will have heard of him but whenever he got a chance to play he made the most of it.
Gary Mabbut. What a legend to have on the bench.
Graham Roberts. Another hard man in the Mike England mould,
    Gazza. Nuff said.
    Lineker. Great goal scorer.
Ossie Ardiles. Lovely little player. Who had the ability to hold off players much bigger than himself.

I won't profess to have the knowledge to name a whole team, but for my tuppence worth, any 'greatest' team simply must contain Greavesie and Gazza.

GK Pat Jennings probably the best keeper I've seen
RB Alf Ramsey only just remember him but a great passer
CB Mike England the best we've seen so far
CB Gary Mabbutt Couldn't leave him out
LB Ledley King again has to be included so I put him here
RM John White My hero the ghost just a complete player made Spurs tick. Missed 15 games in his time and we only won once when he was out
CM Glen Hoddle Perfect passer scorer of great goals
CM Dave Mackay the hard man would run through walls
LM Cliff Jones Pace brave great in the air and on the ground
F Jimmy Greaves Simply the best
F Martin Chivers Would have been a great foil for Greaves

Subs. Ted Ditchburn just in front of Ray Clemence mainly bacause he played in the time when goalkeepers had no referee protection
Phil Beal good steady reliable defender
Cyril Knowles only left out because of Ledders
    Danny Blanchflower great captain
Paul Gascoigne difficult not to include if only for the laughs
Chris Waddle second only to Cliff Jones
Bobby Smith a battering ram never shirked a tackle scored loads

Well thats it today I may change my mind later because havn't included people like Lineker Klinnsman Ginola oh I think I've changed already

I don't see Martin Peters being mentioned so thought i'd do it.

I'm going to ask a serious question now, take it at face value please.
Does 'your' hatred for Sol mean that his contribution to the Spurs over the years goes unrecognised?

Being probably the oldest on here I can go back to the late 40's when I first went to spurs and there have always been great goalkeepers, Bill Brown, Ted Ditchburn but it has to be
Jennings. Always reliable and made goal keepnig look so easy. Should have kept him had anther 6 good years.
Hughton. This was a little tough as Kinnear, Ramsey even Peter Baker were all good players
Knowles. Tragic life story with his death and the freak death of his son. But an outstanding attacking defender. Also considred Henry but knowlsy has it.
    England
King We have had some good CD Norman and Nobby Clarke from the 50's but Ledley and England would have kept everybody out.
Midfield was very, very difficult for me as we have always had great players over the years, Blanchflower, Gazza, Ginola, even Conn. Weller and Medwin were all internationals, but I would loved to have seen a midfield of
Jones Hoddle Mackay White. Hoddle and White are the 2 best passers of a ball I have ever seen. They were similar in style but what a partnership
Greaves and Linaker would have scored goals all day .

    Subs
    Ditchburn
    Blanchflower
    Gazza
    Sheringham
    Waddle
    Mullery
    Gilzean
Some great memories for me there
