Breaking News: Sampdoria to terminate Antonio Cassano’s contract
Sampdoria have apparently decided to terminate Cassano’s contract after the star Italian striker showcased “gravely offensive and disrespectful behaviour” at the club’s training ground. Cassano is a cult figure at Sampdoria, a club where fans absolutely love the skilful Italian. The traditional number 10 player has always found it hard to control his eccentric side as the Real Madrid fans found in the past to their disadvantage.
Cassano’s latest mischievous behaviour might also keep him out of the Italian squad which plays its next friendly match in the second week of November. Antonio Cassano, according to Sampdoria failed to attend an awards ceremony for the club after he had an argument with the Sampdoria’s club president. Sampdoria released an official statement which goes as follows, “In reference to the incident on Tuesday 26 at the Gloriano Mugnaini training ground, during which the player Antonio Cassano showed a gravely offensive and disrespectful attitude to President Riccardo Garrone, UC Sampdoria announce that they have opened a request for disciplinary action”.
In reality this means a termination of Cassano’s contract rather than the customary freezing out of the first team squad process. The club also clarified that the player will receive a telegram notifying him that he is suspended from competitive football until further notice. This new dispute creates further troubles for Cassano who was once seen by many in Italian football, as the new Roberto Baggio. Cassano’s agent Giuseppe Bozzo spoke on the players behalf to the media as he said that “Even if director of sport Doriano Tosi told him not to bother turning up to training today, he will go anyway”.
Bozzo added that, “The day before Garrone’s request, Antonio had turned down a lot of money so he could stay with his pregnant wife Carolina, so in fairness he decided to take the same approach. The matter had been closed between him and the President on Wednesday, but then director general Sergio Gasparin called Cassano to explain this required a written apology. Is this rapport beyond repair? In all honesty, it’s very tough, but I will work with him to make it happen. In any case, I will look after Antonio’s interests in every legal arena.”
If Sampdoria indeed terminate Cassano’s contract then it will mean that they will effectively give up any January transfer window fee that they can coup up for the Italian striker. The row between Cassano and Sampdoria has also opened up a chance for Inter Milan, A.C Milan and Roma to sign the enigmatic striker for practically a zero transfer fee in the January winter transfer window.
