After the Scum the Spams and Manure these are my other hated team. I just love beating Newcastle. However, they have had the Indian sign over us for the last few seasons and always seem to raise their game against us but we are a very different team from the last time they played us and I expect nothing less than a win TBH. We have this awful habbit of slipping up after a decent performance , like viz said in another thread it was like watching brazil yesterday espcially the last 5 mins of the first half when spurs was playing keep ball so much so even the Villa fans joined in the with the chorus of "Ole" at every pass it was really impressive stuff i have to say.

Can we repeat this against the mighty magpies who would love to bring back the glory glory days " when ever that was" .

Lets hope we go out and kick them hard cos if we can then i will really start to believe we have a team to be reckoned with.

    Tottenham v Newcastl

    Tuesday, 28 December 2010
    Barclays Premier League

    Barclays Premier League
Venue: White Hart Lane Date: Tuesday, 28 December Kick-off: 1500 GMT
Coverage: Watch highlights on Wednesday's Match of the Day; listen on BBC Radio 5 live and local radio; text commentary on BBC Sport website and mobiles

    TEAM NEWS
Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe will begin a three-match ban for his sending off against Aston Villa.

Defoe's absence means Spurs will recall Roman Pavlyuchenko or Peter Crouch, while Luka Modric should play despite suffering cramp at Villa.

Newcastle will be without captain Kevin Nolan, who picked up his fifth booking of the season against Manchester City.

Manager Alan Pardew has said that goalkeeper Tim Krul will retain his place despite his error on Boxing Day.

    MATCH PREVIEW
Having won their two previous Premier League games in the capital this season, Newcastle will hope to claim a hat-trick of London scalps against Tottenham, who have lost six of their last seven top-flight matches against the Magpies.
Toon target man Andy Carroll was the match-winner when Newcastle won at Arsenal and West Ham earlier this term. The 21-year-old already has 11 league goals this season, reportedly catching the eye of Spurs boss Harry Redknapp.

However, there appears to be little chance of Newcastle letting Carroll go on the cheap during the January transfer window, with manager Alan Pardew insisting his side have to demonstrate a "big club mentality" and hold on to their prize asset. He will therefore be encouraged that centre-back Steven Taylor, who looked set to leave St James' Park for nothing next summer, has agreed a new contract.

Pardew, who replaced former Spurs stalwart Chris Hughton at Newcastle, has a mixed record against Tottenham. He was in charge of West Ham when they beat Spurs on the final day of the 2005/06 season, denying Martin Jol's team a Champions League spot. However, his Charlton side were relegated from the Premier League in 2007 following a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham.

    MATCH FACTS
    Head-to-head

    • Tottenham's 1-0 win against Newcastle at White Hart Lane in April 2009 ended a run of six consecutive league victories for the Magpies in this fixture. Newcastle scored a total of 18 goals in that six-game run.

    Tottenham

    • The 1-0 defeat to Wigan in August is Tottenham's only defeat in their last 20 Premier League games at White Hart Lane.

    • They are unbeaten in nine league and cup home games since losing 4-1 to Arsenal in the Carling Cup.

    • Harry Redknapp's side have failed to win their last five games against newly-promoted sides since a 5-0 victory against Burnley last season.

    • Spurs have not kept a Premier League clean sheet since their 0-0 draw with Manchester City on the opening day of the season.

    Newcastle

    • The Magpies have lost their last two away games, conceding a total of eight goals.

    • Newcastle have won both of their Premier League games in London this season, taking maximum points at West Ham and Arsenal. The Magpies also drew at home to Fulham and Chelsea, and are therefore unbeaten in four league games against London sides this term.

    • Five of Andy Carroll's 11 league goals this term have been headers - all of them assisted by Joey Barton.

There we go another 3 points and a foot into the top 4 & that elusive clean sheet to boot. 2 red cards in 2 games does not make for good viewing. Kaboul should not have lead with his head but in his defence that Barcode player should never have been on the pitch. It was a second yellow just before that for clattering Bale. Newcastle were very physical. If this is how Newcastle are going to play under Pardew they will not win many fans. LOL can you imagine certain other managers should that performance been against their team ? Talking about leading with the head why did Carrol stay on the pitch ? He pushed both hands into Gomes face when challenging then stuck his face in. A clean sheet at last was for me the high point. All players played well and we can feel vey satisfied with this result . . . . .

    Tottenham 2 Newcastle 0

Gareth Bale's 10th goal of the season ensured that 10-man Tottenham leap-frogged Chelsea into fourth place after a hard-fought and ill-tempered battle with Newcastle at White Hart Lane.

Bale's electric pace allowed him to beat Steve Taylor down the left before unleashing a powerful drive that beat Tim Krul after Aaron Lennon put the hosts ahead just before the hour.

Spurs ended the match with 10 men for the second time in two days after Younes Kaboul was dismissed for forcing his head onto Cheik Tiote's in what was an otherwise feisty encounter that produced six bookings.

The hosts, who had Roman Pavlyuchenko up front in place of the suspended Jermain Defoe, started brightly and Lennon registered the first shot on target after firing a low drive at Krul two minutes in.

Andy Carroll, a reported transfer target for Spurs, made his physical presence felt up front but the hosts looked more dangerous early on, with Van der Vaart, Lennon and Luka Modric the main threats up front.

Michael Dawson was next to feel the full force of Carroll's hulking frame when he fell to the turf clutching his shoulder after going up for a header before he picked himself up and carried on.

Carroll had his first effort 25 minutes in when he twisted his body to meet Jonas Gutierrez's cross but his header fell onto the roof of the net.

Bale, who had a quiet start, then burst into life by capitalising on Danny Simpson's mistake to race past Alan Smith and Fabricio Coloccini into the box - but the former Leeds man scrambled back to block the Welshman's six-yard shot.

Joey Barton, captaining the side in Nolan's absence, clattered into the back of Bale and was furious with the referee's decision to award a free-kick.

Krul reacted well to tip over a Van der Vaart curler from the resulting free kick just before a Wilson Palacios mistake allowed Cheik Tiote to fire a weak shot at Gomes with half an hour gone.

Tiote then entered the book for claiming that Van der Vaart had dived in the box as the match started to become ill-tempered.

A second error from Wilson Palacios allowed Carroll to break free before the Honduran brought the striker down from behind, earning him a booking.

Pavlyuchenko powered an effort towards goal but Krul pushed the ball onto his left-hand post before the ball ricocheted off the other stanchion and rolled out to safety.

Palacios paid the price for his sub-par first half and was replaced by former Newcastle man Jermaine Jenas at the break.

Van der Vaart almost gave the home side the lead when he flashed a curling shot over Krul but luckily for the away side, the ball fell just wide of the Newcastle goal.

The Dawson-Carroll battle resumed three minutes into the second half, with the striker requiring treatment after going up for a header.

Both Kaboul and Gutierrez were booked for fouls on Barton and Lennon respectively as the game threatened to boil over.

Spurs broke the deadlock in the 57th minute when Lennon raced down the right and beat Krul with a low drive from inside the box after being given space by James Perch.

Smith became the fifth person to be booked when he hacked down Bale on the touchline.

Tiote, who was lucky not to receive a second yellow for a foul on Modric, then squared up to Kaboul after the midfielder slid in to tackle the defender.

The former Pompey man forced his head forward onto Tiote's and although not a clear head-butt, was enough to persuade referee Taylor to send Kaboul off, much to the disapproval of the Spurs bench.

The dismissal caused Redknapp to bring off Pavlyuchenko for Sebastien Bassong while Alan Pardew sought to push home Newcastle's numerical advantage by introducing striker Nile Ranger for Gutierrez.

Peter Crouch then came on for Van der Vaart as Spurs faced up to closing the match out with 10 men as they did against Aston Villa two days ago.

Jenas then released Lennon down the right but the England winger shot just wide, before Tiote was replaced by Peter Lovenkrands.

Any hopes of a Newcastle comeback were extinguished with 10 minutes left when Modric broke over the halfway line before finding Bale on the left wing.

The Welshman accelerated past Taylor before smashing a low angled drive past Krul for his 10th of the season.

Carroll was booked in the closing stages for a foul on Gomes as Newcastle's challenge petered out.

Post by Guest Wed Dec 29 2010, 04:21

Ten-man Tottenham moved into the top four of the Premier League with victory over Newcastle in a feisty affair.

Aaron Lennon opened the scoring in the second-half when he cut in from the right to drill in an angled shot from just inside the area.

Younes Kaboul was then shown a red card for appearing to thrust his head at Newcastle's Cheik Tiote.

Gareth Bale added the second when he surged run down the left and fired in a rasping effort past keeper Tim Krul.

The scoreline was definitely a deserved one on the balance of play, although Newcastle did well to frustrate their usually free-flowing opponents for much of the match.

Aware of Spurs's potency on the wings, Alan Pardew's Newcastle packed the midfield but were forced to bring in full-back James Perch for the more assured Jose Enrique at left-back.

It was an ideal scenario for right-winger Lennon. But apart from the cross for Roman Pavlyuchenko's first-half header, brilliantly saved by Krul, and the goal, Lennon was given little space by the former Nottingham Forest player.

In fact, Newcastle's defence performed admirably with much of what Spurs threw at them in the opening 45 minutes. A marked difference to the opening five minutes against Manchester City.

Most of it was last ditch, however.

Harry Redknapp's side are a credit to the Premier League for staying true to their unofficial motto of "attack, attack, attack" and left-sided dynamo Bale has often led by example this season.

Midway through the first half he cut in from the left, eluded two Newcastle challenges and swept into the area before his attempt to shoot from little more than six yards was blocked by the biting Alan Smith.

Dutchman Rafael Van der Vaart, arguably this season's best signing so far, then tested Newcastle's Krul with a 25-yard free-kick which his compatriot had to tip over.

Van der Vaart then tried to create some room for himself inside the area but saw his shot blocked by Fabricio Coloccini.

And the closest they came to scoring before the goal came moments before half-time when Krul produced an extraordinary save to deny Pavlyuchenko.

Perch had the right to claim he had Lennon "in his pocket" in the opening half, but he was all at sea for the opener when the England winger bore down on goal, after coming in from the right, before drilling a shot that deflected off the left-back and past Krul.

Tottenham were now looking to open up a Newcastle side who did well to keep the potent Londoners at bay.

But Redknapp's side were handed a setback in their quest when Kaboul was shown a straight red when he appeared to thrust his head at Tiote, who had forcefully, but cleanly, tackled him seconds earlier.

Instead of packing the defence and seeing out the match, Redknapp brought on forward Peter Crouch.

It was a bold move, although it was the slightly more defensive-minded Bale who settled the match in typical fashion.

The Wales international was sent on his way down the left by Luka Modric before charging inside and rocketing an unstoppable shot with unerring accuracy past the reach of Krul.

That was essentially game, set and match.

The victory meant that Redknapp's side kept up the pressure on the leaders on what has proved to be the most open championship race in many years.

It was also the first time since the opening day of the season that Spurs kept a clean sheet - more of those and, come May, Spurs could be toasting an event that has not occurred since 1961.

Harry Redknapp believes Tottenham were rewarded for their attacking philosophy as they beat Newcastle 2-0 to move into the Premier League top four.

The Spurs boss brought on striker Peter Crouch after Younes Kaboul was sent off with the score at 1-0, before Gareth Bale made sure of the win late on.

"We showed great character again," Redknapp told BBC Sport.

"It's handy to have a one-goal lead when you go down to 10 men. We still kept playing and didn't sit back."

Redknapp was also relieved his side kept their first clean sheet in the league since the opening day of the season.

"We've not had too many of them. We're an open team that attack at every opportunity - so that was nice," added the 63-year-old.

Newcastle kept Tottenham's attack at bay before Aaron Lennon opened the scoring shortly after the break and Bale added a second late on - his 10th of the campaign - with a fine finish from a typical surging run.

"The first half was scrappy and went the way Newcastle wanted - they filled up the midfield. We got round the back of them twice and that's how the goals came," Redknapp continued.

"Aaron has to continue to drive outside and drive inside, that's what he did today. Gareth's done that all season. He went on the outside of Newcastle defender Steven Taylor and smashed it in.

"Ten goals is an amazing stat for Gareth. You want your central midfield player to get six or seven and your front men to get a few more, but he's scored his goals as a winger."

Redknapp had no sympathy for Kaboul, who was sent off midway through the second half for appearing to thrust his forehead at Newcastle's Cheik Tiote.

"If he's put his head in his face he had to go off," Redknapp commented.

"He showed a lack of discipline. Other people will now come into the team while he's suspended, and they'll make it difficult to be shifted."

Meanwhile, Newcastle manager Alan Pardew was left to rue his side's lacklustre attacking display at White Hart Lane.

"I thought a lot of things we did today were very good, we nullified Spurs to a certain degree," Pardew reflected.

"We had opportunities to hurt Spurs, but we were poor and not at our best.

"Their first goal had an element of fortune because our keeper Tim Krul could have saved the shot if it hadn't taken a deflection."

One player who pulled out of the squad after picking up an injury was left-back Jose Enrique.

However, Pardew was fuming after learning that the Spanish defender had revealed his fate on Twitter.

"Did he tweet it, did he?" Pardew asked reporters after the defeat.

"Players can't be giving that sort of information out. It's difficult to police - we need to make it a club policy that it has to stop."
