Match Thread Vs Man United Empty Match Thread Vs Man United

Post by Guest Fri Aug 19 2011, 22:30

An undermanned Manchester United welcome top-four chasing Tottenham in what shapes as an early danger game.

The champions' 2-1 win at West Bromwich Albion in the opening round of fixtures came at a cost with central defensive pairing Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic succumbing to injuries.

It means youngster Phil Jones, 19, is likely to be partnered by either Jonny Evans, 23, or Chris Smalling, 21, at the heart of defence at Old Trafford on Monday.

They come up against a threatening Tottenham side who, after having their opening Premier League fixture against Everton postponed, dealt Scottish side Hearts a 5-0 belting in Thursday's Europa League playoff first leg.

Five players netted goals, including dangerous attacking quartet Rafael van der Vaart, Jermain Defoe, Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon.

Manager Harry Redknapp was delighted with the display against Hearts and his team will need to produce something similar against United.

They have the perfect opportunity with Ferdinand and Vidic out and goalkeeper David de Gea under pressure following another error last time out.

The Spaniard, 20, joined from Atletico Madrid but has struggled to settle in filling the place of the retired Edwin van der Sar, letting in an Edin Dzeko strike in the Community Shield and Shane Long's effort at The Hawthorns.

Spurs midfielder van der Vaart will likely test the shot-stopper with his lethal left foot, while Defoe will be out to torment the inexperienced United centre backs.

Sir Alex Ferguson will benefit from the return of left-back Patrice Evra, while forward Javier Hernandez looks likely to miss again as he continues to recover from concussion.

Wayne Rooney will again shoulder a heavy workload up front, but he is coming off a strong first-up performance, which included a goal.

This shapes as a vital clash for Tottenham, whose next Premier League fixture will be against Manchester City, before a trip to Wolverhampton and a clash with Liverpool.

With wantaway midfielder Luka Modric's future still up in the air, Redknapp is relying on the creativity offered by van der Vaart, Bale and Lennon.

If they can keep a clean sheet, something they largely struggled to do even throughout their pre-season friendlies, they may come away with the points from Old Trafford.

But with Nani, Rooney and Ashley Young a constant threat, Redknapp's team will have their work cut out, especially away from home.

    Man Utd v Tottenham

    Barclays Premier League
    Venue: Old Trafford
    Date: Monday, 22 August
    Kick-off: 2000 BST
Coverage: Watch live on Sky Sports 1; listen on BBC Radio 5 live and local radio; text commentary on BBC Sport website and mobiles

    TEAM NEWS

Manchester United will be without injured trio Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Rafael.

Jonny Evans is set to partner Phil Jones at centre-back, while left-back Patrice Evra is fit despite missing out against West Brom with a knee injury.

Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric is likely to start even though he missed the win at Hearts with a groin problem.

Spurs will monitor Peter Crouch's ankle injury, while Ledley King, William Gallas and Alan Hutton are ruled out.

    MATCH PREVIEW

The record books rarely provide encouragement for visiting teams at Old Trafford, and Tottenham fans heading to Manchester may do so more in hope than expectation. It is a decade since Spurs beat the Red Devils, with Willem Korsten among the scorers in a 3-1 win at White Hart lane.
Harry Redknapp's side will also be aware of United's formidable home record last season, when they won 18 of 19 league games on their own patch. However, now could be a good time to face the reigning champions, who may have to field an inexperienced defensive line-up on Monday.

The back five who finished United's 2-1 win against West Brom had an average age of just 20 years and 193 days; David de Gea, Phil Jones and Fabio were not even born the last time Spurs won away to United, back in 1989.

The Red Devils rearguard could be in for a real test against a Tottenham side who ruthlessly put Europa League opponents Hearts to the sword on Thursday, scoring five unanswered goals.

    MATCH FACTS

    Head-to-head
    • Tottenham have failed to win any of their last 24 meetings with Manchester United in all competitions.
    • Spurs' last victory over United was a 3-1 success in May 2001 at White Hart Lane. They have failed to win any of the subsequent 20 league matches, two FA Cup ties and two League Cup games.
    • It's 22 years since Spurs last won at Old Trafford - a 1-0 victory in December 1989 courtesy of a Gary Lineker goal.

    Manchester United
    • The Red Devils registered just one shot on target against West Brom, according to Opta, fewer than in 76 of their last 77 league games.
    • They won 18 of their 19 league games at Old Trafford last term, equalling the Premier League record for most points won on home turf.
    • Manchester United substitutes scored 11 league goals in 2010-11, more than any other team.

    Tottenham
    • Spurs won just three of their final 12 league games last season.
    • They kept one clean sheet in their last eight top-flight matches.
    • Seven of their eight league losses in 2010-11 came away from home.
    • They scored 15 goals from outside the penalty area last season, four more than any other Premier League side.

Theres no Clattenberg or Howard Webb for this one Lobo ..... I think the ref is Lee Probert thou I'm not 100% ...

We're due a win there , we've recently done both Liverpool and the Goons away so maybe this season a win at Old Trafford or the Bridge is going to happen ?

To do this, I feel our forward line should be putting their defenders under presure , giving them no time on the ball...This means not playing with the lone striker up front but rather playing with three up top in a 4-3-3........ 4-5-1 just doesnt work against them, how many more games playing that way with no favourable result ? ... I watched Real Madrid in their recent games versus Barcelona playing three up top and Barcelona were reduced to hoofing ...Villareal did it to Barca too ....Play three up top and have our forwards running round like madmen pressurisng the opponents defenders and watch their game crumble ....

Its up to Harry, to sometimes try new methods ...Thou Im not sure he will ...Probs be a 4-5-1 ...Their defenders end up passing it around whilst smoking their cigars and in the process knackering our lone man ...We shall see....

Well f*ck me Modric ain't fit and Reknapp isn't brave enough to kick his backside and tell him to sort it out and play for the Spurs ? I like your team Arnie but I just can't see Redknapp playing 3 up front and yup Charlie at right back for the experience he holds. This ain't a game to "blood" Walker in till we are at least 3 up lol . . . . . .

How can you say BLOOD Walker he's Englands no 1 RB for christ sake and Corluka is to slow and will be over run as he is in most games.
Walker and Lennon's speed down the right will really unsettle them. If he plays Corluka then he's not going for a win. Walker should be starting every game for us this year. To keep playing the old brigade is not forward thinking in my book , Walker has to play.

Quite easily Mikey. I believe Utd 'done him' when he was on loan at Villa ? I would deffo start with Corluka's experience in this game. To me that is the idea of having a squad. Walker will play more & more as the season goes on but right now I want a victory at Ole Scaffold. I take your point about playing Lennon & Walker but Lennon & Corluka know each others game and that, for me, is important against a Utd side we always struggle to get a result against . . . . .

Luka Modric's 'head is not right' to face Man Utd says Harry Redknapp

Modric joined Spurs from Dinamo Zagreb in 2008

    Luka Modric will not face
Manchester United on Monday night because "his head's not in the right
place", according to Spurs boss Harry Redknapp.

Tottenham have turned down bids of £22m and £27m from Chelsea for the 25-year-old Croatian midfielder.

Modric has hinted he wants to leave White Hart Lane, but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy insists he won't sell at any price.

"He's not playing," said Redknapp. "His head's not in the right place."

The Tottenham manager told talkSPORT: "We need him playing, he's very important to us, so we have to sort it out."

Redknapp believes Chelsea's capture of Valencia midfielder Juan Mata on Sunday for £23.5m will affect the situation.

"I would think that's the end of the Modric deal surely," he said.

"The chairman is away. He's said he (Modric) is not for sale, so that's where we're at with it.

"I think he's made up his mind he's not going to sell him, no matter what the price.

"Luka's got to get on with it now and hopefully have another good season for us.

"Daniel (Levy) said he would like to sit down with Luka in a month or so when it's all died down a bit."

    • Zrinjski Mostar - loan (2003-2004)
    • Inter Zapresic - loan (2003-2004)
    • Tottenham (2008-Present)

Redknapp confirmed he is still looking to bring more players in before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

And he hasn't ruled out organising a loan deal for Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

"I think we'll make a couple of signings, for sure," he said.

"I saw (City chief executive) Garry Cook and he said there were one or two snags over the money.

"We're not paying all his wages, that's for sure, so I don't know where that one's at just now."

I disagree Vis. When Corluka and Lennon have played together Lennon has his worse games as he doesn't seem to know what to do with Corluka bombing forward at the wrong times leaving Lennon in no mans land. They don't seem to have a real understanding. I make no secret of the fact that I don't rate Corluka as I've said it many times. He is caught out of position so many times during a game and leaves the defence so exposed.
I just feel that if Corluka plays against Utd Lennon will have a quiet game.

Then what do I know I said that the Hearts game would be 0-0.
