Brad Friedel wasn’t interested in personal statistics after Monday night’s defeat at Old Trafford.
Our summer signing from Aston Villa lined-up for his Spurs debut at
United and in doing so, stretched his amazing run of successive matches
in the Premier League to 267.
The American was in outstanding form but could do little to prevent the champions completing a 3-0 victory.
“I don’t count the games, I’m just bitterly disappointed with the
result,” said Brad. “I don’t play for personal accolades, I really
don’t. I just want to play to help the team win.
“We didn’t win and we go home disappointed.”
Brad produced a fine save to deny Tom Cleverley in the first half as we held our own at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’.
Goalless at the break, United broke the deadlock through Danny
Welbeck just after the hour. It was the key moment. Harry Redknapp made a
double switch in search of an equaliser with 15 minutes remaining but
United countered and goals after 76 and 87 minutes secured the points.
Brad made a series of saves out of the top-drawer in an open match that flowed end-to-end for the best part of the 90 minutes.
“We came in quite pleased at half-time,” added Brad. “For the first
five or 10 minutes of the second half we wanted to make sure we didn’t
get carved open but once the first goal went in, the heads went down a
touch and we didn’t recover."
SPURS AT 40 - THE STATS
Brad made his debut for Spurs aged 40 years, 96 days.
Only two players have featured in the Football League for Spurs after their 40th birthday.
Centre forward Jimmy Cantrell played his final game on April 21, 1923
v Birmingham aged 40 years 349 days and utility man Harry Lowe was 40
years 221 days when facing Bolton on March 19, 1927.
The nearest anyone has come in the recent past is Ray Clemence 39 years 65 days v Norwich, October 10, 1987.
This is the kind of attitude we need at Spurs.
