Tottenham manager
Harry
Redknapp has had yet more praise heaped upon him in the wake of this
week's Champions League qualification - this time from a slightly
unexpected quarter.
Basketball superstar Steve Nash is a
lifelong Spurs supporter with father John born in Tottenham and having
been a former non-league footballer in the London area.
Summer holidays in Nash's youth were spent with extended family in North
London and there were frequent trips to White Hart Lane and to watch
his heroes train. In fact, among Nash's many prized possessions at home
in Phoenix, Arizona, is a photograph taken in the early 1980's of
schoolboy Nash with his football idol Glenn Hoddle.
Now, Nash is one of the best basketball players in the world, a two-time
NBA MVP (player-of-the-year), and is currently involved with the
Phoenix Suns in a thrilling NBA second round play-off series with ... by
a nice twist of sporting coincidence, the San Antonio Spurs.
Not that that prevented Nash from tuning in to watch Tottenham win at
Manchester City this week, a result that prompted an email from the
Spurs fanatic to FanHouse UK.
"What can you say about Harry?" wrote Nash. "He's come in when the club
are at the bottom of the table and doubt is entrenched and 18 months
later we're in the Champions League!
"Not only has he gotten results but they've played excellent attacking
football and most importantly built a team with steel and belief.
"I've dreamed of this type of team and outcome my whole life but was
never sure I'd see the day.
"Hopefully now we can go on and strengthen the belief and build upon
what Harry's created - a proper football team.
"And it would be a great double if we could take a leaf out of Harry's
book and get to the Finals for the first time."
Nash, 36, is also a vocal supporter of the England football team and is
tipping them for an unlikely World Cup triumph in South Africa this
summer although, at that stage, he will be hoping that his Suns team are
in the NBA Finals for the first time.
