French press claim Spurs deal is close

French publication L’Equipe claims that Paris Saint Germain midfielder Stephane Sessegnon is being tracked by Tottenham Hotspur as Harry Redknapp looks to steal the Benin international from the grasp of former club West Ham United.
Spurs are thought to be ready to offer a fee in the region of £6.5 million for the 26-year-old playmaker; a figure which trumps that offered by the Hammers and one that is deemed acceptable to the Parc des Princes hierarchy.
Sessegnon moved to Paris two seasons ago after the Ligue 1 club beat off competition from Newcastle United and Arsenal to snap up the midfielder from Le Mans. He has since become an integral part of the set-up in the French capital but is understood to be frustrated at last season’s 13th place finish in the league.
The opportunity to play Champions League football is thought to be a serious fillip for Sessegnon who has yet to taste top level European football despite his impressive qualities.
Harry Redknapp is known to be on the lookout for midfield additions before the transfer window closes as he looks to build and consolidate last term's fourth place fininsh. Since signing Sandro from Brazilian side Internacional the Lilywhites have yet to spend further cash this summer although Scott Parker is thought to have been approached about a move to White Hart Lane.

According to L’Equipe, Tottenham Hotspur are preparing to beat West Ham United to the signature of Benin born Paris Saint Germain midfielder Stephane Sessegnon.

Tottenham have already bought the highly rated Brazilian, Sandro, who operates as a defensive midfielder but it seems that Harry Redknapp has also highlighted the need to bring in a box-to-box midfielder to the squad. With Scott Parker unavailable other options are being considered.

Yesterday, against Young Boys Bern, Wilson Palacios looked awful. It may be just the second game of the new season but many Spurs fans have been grumbling that he gives the ball away too often leading to the defence being placed in unnecessary pressure.

Jermaine Jenas is clearly not one of Redknapp’s favourites. The former England international and former Spurs vice-captain is consistently being linked to a move away from White Hart Lane suggesting that his opportunities at Spurs will be limited.

Sessegnon moved to Lique 2 side, Creteil, in 2004. The midfielder netted 10 goals in 68 appearances before a transfer to Le Mans. Despite stepping up a division, Sessegnon’s impressive displays meant that after 61 appearances and six goals the 25-year-old moved to PSG. Over the course of two seasons he has made 63 appearances and scored 8 goals.

The 26 year old stands at 5ft 6inches but compensates for his lack of height by a stocky frame, excellent technique and great acceleration. Some in France have compared his strength with that of Michael Essien’s who previously played for Lyon.

What is unusual about Sessegnon is that he can play in a variety of defensive as well as attacking positions. Unusually for a player who is able to win the ball, he possesses great dribbling skills and is able to take on and beat players with relative ease.

Many Tottenham fans will be reading this finding it difficult to understand why Redknapp would want to buy another midfielder. What the Spurs manager has done in the past is stock players high until he finds the ones that he likes and then sells the rest.

Papers such as the Mail have quoted a £6.5 million price for the player which is a complete load of nonsense. PSG will be looking for around £15 million. If a deal is done it will be for approximately £13 million.
