Redknapp's lucky to have my great players, claims Comolli

Damien Comolli believes the players he brought to Tottenham can help the club win the Premier League this season and claims he has been given credit for the club's recent successes.Comolli was sporting director at White Hart Lane from September 2005 until October 2008, leaving along with former manager Juande Ramos and coach Gus Poyet with the team bottom of the table.Spurs' dramatic improvement since has largely been attributed to chairman Daniel Levy's decision to employ Harry Redknapp as manager and dispense with the sporting director system. But with six Comolli signings — Heurelho Gomes, Vedran Corluka, Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Aaron Lennon, Luka Modric and Gareth Bale — likely to be in Spurs' strongest XI, the Frenchman can claim to have played his part.“The talent at the club is unbelievable,” said Comolli, who is now sporting director at St Etienne. “They can challenge to win the Premier League, maybe this season or within the next two or three years.“If you take position by position the quality of the players at Spurs, there are not many who are better than them. I expect some of them to go to the very top of world football.“I am happy when football people around Europe come to me and say they're my players and that they're doing well. It's a good feeling. “I've had so much positive feedback since I've left and I hope people now understand what the job was all about.“I'm also pleased that the players trusted what we told them at the time. We told them they'd be playing in the Champions League sooner rather than later. Modric had all the major clubs after him and it was great for him to trust us.“They will definitely qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League. If they keep the same team together, the players are really young. There are key players like Modric, Bale and Tom Huddlestone who are not even 26, and Gomes is just reaching his peak now.” Redknapp has done a fine job to turn a club who were fearing relegation two years ago into Champions League qualifiers in 18 months. Spurs have started this season solidly as they try to maintain the outstanding form they showed in 2009-10. They have four points from their first two group games in the Champions League and they are fifth in the Premier League with 11 points from seven matches. While Comolli praises Redknapp warmly for his work in the last two seasons, he also believes the 63-year-old was lucky to assume control at a club where many of the foundations were already in place. He said: “I think he was fortunate to get into a club which is wealthy, organised and well run. There was a very good squad put together at the time and there were young players coming through.“You have Steven Caulker, who played against Arsenal in the Carling Cup and who has gone on loan to Bristol City. He was a player we found. He was 15 or 16 and come out of nowhere.“When we saw him play for the first time, we couldn't believe that nobody else had known about him. Then, Harry has done very well to make sure the players there gelled. “He made them perform and developed the resilient attitude and the determination they now have.”Not all of Comolli's transfer dealings at White Hart Lane were a success — most notably David Bentley and Gilberto — ensuring his Tottenham record will continue to divide supporters but his performance at St Etienne has been impressive. Working with a relatively small budget, he has been part of a backroom team that have helped the club to second in Ligue 1. Yet Comolli, who also worked as a European scout for Arsenal, still has an eye on a return to the English game.“I think anybody who has worked in England from abroad has this in his mind and in his blood. It's fantastic to work here, the passion of the fans is great,” he said. “But I'm happy where I am at the moment. Last summer we signed four players for a total of £145,000 and we are second in the league.”
