Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe is out of the Europa League quarter-final first leg tie against Basel with a groin injury.

Defoe could be sidelined for up to 10 days and is also likely to miss Sunday's league game against Everton.

Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has recovered from a knee injury suffered in France's World Cup qualifier against Spain.

Sandro and Younes Kaboul are still out, but Clint Dempsey is back in the squad after playing for the United States.

Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas said: "Jermain is a new injury blow.

"He is likely to miss the next two games against Basel and Everton, but has a small chance [of returning] for the second leg against Basel."

Basel knocked Manchester United out of the Champions League group stages last season and beat eventual finalists Bayern Munich in the first leg of their last-16 tie, before being eliminated.

The Swiss side have since sold influential midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri to Bayern but have beaten Russian champions Zenit St Petersburg and Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon in the Europa League, while remain on target to retain their domestic title, this campaign.

Tottenham, who missed out on qualification for this year's Champions League following Chelsea's victory in last season's final, are battling to secure one of the Premier League's four qualifying spots for next season's competition.

With his side four points clear of fifth-placed Arsenal having played a game more, Villas-Boas admits he fighting on two fronts.

"We want to focus on trying to win the Europa League but we understand that the fans' and the club's expectations are for us to try and reach Champions League qualification this year," he said.

"What sets the success of a football team is their league position at the end of every season but we want to do extremely well in the competition."

Swiss Christian Gross spent an unsuccessful nine months in charge of Tottenham before being sacked by the club in September 1998.
He returned to his homeland and, during 10 years at Basel, won the league four times. His side also knocked Liverpool out en route to the second group stage of the 2002-3 Champions League.

    what utter sh*t that was.

avb did you not see how bad galas was aganst inter.

they was better then us because they passed the ball.

wtf naughton just smashing the ball upfeild.
    keep the bloody ball.

bale getting p*ssed off because that player was better then him then trys to foul him and then gets hurt himself.

wish we had modric instead then we wouldnt be such a 1 man team.

poor ade upfront on hes own tonight run hes ass off but no support.

dempsey. why was he brought on. he had one chance and trys a glory shot

    FC Basel Match Thread _66758157_66758156
Tottenham's hopes of making the Europa League semi-finals are in the balance after they fought back to draw with Basel in their last-eight first leg.

The Swiss champions took the lead at White Hart Lane through Valentin Stocker's close-range finish.

Fabian Frei headed in to double the advantage, only for Emmanuel Adebayor to pull one back with a volley.

Gylfi Sigurdsson equalised with a deflected strike, but Gareth Bale was carried off with an ankle injury.

    More to follow.

Why the f*ck does he persist with Gallas, every time we play him, the whole defence plays sh*t, thank god his injured, maybe without the limelight being on Bale might do us a favour.

Lought the player who was better then Bale (Salah?)had already been substituted me thinks and as for "poor Ade"! Get real. OK he scored but apart from that he gave the ball to Basel by either failing to complete a pass or giving away a foul. We, Spurs as a team, have been poorer since he has been starting matches after his delayed return from the ACN . . . .

Weren't that the same Modric that went missing last season when we surrendered our place to the Gooners, you only seem to remember the good things abt some players and got a great memory abt others. Modric would have made no difference, the whole team was poor, because if you re not solid at the back, it runs through the whole team.

brad 7. nothing he could do
    naughton. 6 stop wasting posseson
    gallas 4 hes finnised
    verts 6 for effort
ekotto wont be here nest season
holtby6 just when he got in the game avb takes him off.
demebele 7 1 of our better players first half but went missing second.

parker. hes a hog carrier. he would not get in any other big club. football is about keeping the ball.

    lennon. n/a injurid again

bale 2 invisible then he got fed up because that guy was better then him then trys to foul him and gets hurt himself.

ade.7 worked hard but no support

avb 0. did he not watch the inter game.

why start both lennon and bale.
why start galas when you have dawson and caulker.

why get in a postion where you have to rely on a 36 to finnish the game.

why why bring dempsey on. we got even worse after that.

wrong. modric can keep the ball and one pass will change defence into attack. something parker cant do.

as for ade when he did win the ball there was nobody near him.

3 goals in 7 games compared to defoe 1 in 19games.

vis think about it. since bale been moved into the hole. he dont set up our stikers anymore and they get less chances.

get bale off hes ego trip and put him left wing and say you can wander at times

Lought lets look at Adabigpayrise and some of his stats shall we?
He starts against Basel and we scrape a draw.
He starts against Fulham and we lose.
He starts against Inter and we lose.
He starts against Lyon and we scrape a draw.
All this since he is back from the ANC
Your dislike of Defoe clouds your judgement so you big him up as the best striking option we have but all too often HE drifts left therefore stopping Bale going there as an attacking threat, He concedes possession by giving away stupid free-kicks and slows down our attacks when he does manage to hold the ball up. All too often he holds the ball then passes to the opposing team ffs. He's on a cushy contract and doesn't give a sh*t mate. The sooner he is gone the better. I'd rather have Andy Carrol in his shirt. . . .
