Re: Beckham done
David Beckham completes medical and prepares to train with Tottenham but loan deal is still not done
David Beckham is unlikely to play for Tottenham Hotspur unless his club, LA Galaxy, can be persuaded to allow him to return to them later than the Feb 10 date they are insisting on.
It is understood that the date is now the only sticking point to a short-term loan deal being agreed. Talks were ongoing on Monday between Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy and Tim Leiweke, the chief executive of AEG who run the Galaxy. A final decision is imminent.
Spurs are not, however, hopeful that Galaxy can be persuaded to change their minds after insisting that Beckham is back in Los Angeles for the middle of next month ahead of the Major League Soccer season starting on March 15.
The quandary for Spurs manager Harry Redknapp is simple: if he signs Beckham to play then, as things stand, he will have the 35-year-old midfielder for only five matches and would also have to sacrifice a place in his 25-man squad to a player who would then leave 10 days after .
Spurs have been using a squad of 24 this season — with Kyle Naughton going out on loan — but Redknapp is eager to come up to the full complement allowed under the Premier League rules as he continues to compete for that competition and the Champions League.
A squad place is likely to be freed up with the loan of David Bentley, who is close to completing a loan move to Birmingham City, having undergone a medical on Monday. He will replace Newcastle United-bound Sebastian Larsson. Spurs are also hoping to sell Robbie Keane this month. Redknapp is hoping to sign a striker as his replacement.
Spurs are insistent that it will be solely Redknapp’s decision if he wants to proceed with his squad in this way and both the club and Beckham’s camp are insistent there are no other issues that are preventing the move.
It had been claimed — and Redknapp had publicly stated this before later clarifying the situation — that there was a wrangle over who paid Beckham’s insurance premium. But this is not the case. Neither is there any dispute over a loan fee — none is being paid — or wages.
Indeed, it is believed there are no financial considerations holding up a deal. However, in the nature of such things, Spurs might have to pay some money as recompense to try to hold on to Beckham for longer.
Galaxy want to be seen to be acting tough over the player, not least because he has only recently recovered from the serious Achilles injury which ruled him out of most of last season for them and which happened during his loan spell with AC Milan.
As things stand, if Spurs were to register Beckham he would he available only for the following matches: Manchester United at home, Newcastle United away, the fourth round of the FA Cup away to Fulham, Blackburn Rovers away and Bolton Wanderers at home on Feb 5.
Crucially he would not be available for the Champions League tie against AC Milan and would also be ruled out of contention for an England recall, which he still hopes to achieve.
Beckham will train with the first-team squad today after arriving at Spurs Lodge — the club’s training ground in Chigwell, Essex — to undergo a medical. Usually the medicals at the club take two days to complete but Beckham spent most of the day at the training ground and a nearby hospital to carry out the tests.
Beckham was also issued with training kit and if he is unable to play a competitive match for Spurs, he will at least train with the club — as he has done previously with Arsenal — until he has to report for pre-season training with the Galaxy.
It is understood that Beckham is relaxed about the situation although he remains hopeful that the two clubs can reach an agreement. The ball would appear to be in Spurs’ court.
It had been hoped that Spurs’ tie-up with AEG – their partner in their bid to take over the Olympic Stadium — would help facilitate the move but that has not been the case.
That link was also highlighted by Karren Brady, the vice-chairman of West Ham, who are Tottenham’s rivals to occupy the Olympic Stadium, who claimed signing Beckham could see him used as a “puppet”.
However, her claim was dismissed as “laughable” by a Beckham spokesman, who added: “We would never get involved in anything like that.”
Both clubs have been named as preferred bidders to move into the Stratford site with a decision due to be taken before March by the Olympic Park Legacy Company.

This will send out a signal to all the players in the world that spurs is the place to be, Beckham without doubt the most Famous football player on planet even at 35 can't fart without someone somewhere knowing about it.
joining Spurs even if its only for a short time still has 2 great advantages for us as a club , the first being everyone will know who Spurs are now and this will attract great attention from the world media thus thrusting the club into the limelight, its a great way to attract investment , the second advantage is now all the best players in the world will look at us and say yea ive heard of Spurs , because like it or not David Beckham attracts that kind of attention from the media Circus.
Hopefully now we can sign Suarez, and my final thought ...
