Last August I posted my first article on Vital Spurs in
which I suggested that the jury was still out on Harry`s transfer
record. (http://www.spurs.vitalfootball.co.uk/article.asp?a=7505448)
Although
the article was tempered with just praise for his achievement, I was
roundly criticised and damned as an Arry`ater. With rumours circulating
that Harry may be on his way to Chelsea, perhaps now, after nearly 3
years as manager and in his 6th transfer window, the time is right for
the jury to return.
Do you think that the £50 million invested
in Defoe, Crouch and Keane was money well spent? Was Wilson Palacios a
good buy at £14 million? Does Harry deserve any credit for signing
Sandro? Was VDV the signing of the season, or the bargain we didn`t
want? Does the success of the signing of William Gallas compensate for
any of his failures? Was he right to sell Darren Bent? Was £1 million a
good price for Adel Taarabt, Championship player of the season? Are we
likely to make a profit on the £8 million Harry paid for Sebastian
Bassong? Are the signings of Kranjcar, Kaboul, Pienaar, Walker or
Naughton likely to make a positive impact on Harry`s transfer legacy?
For
all my cynicism, I do have some sympathy for Harry on this issue. Of
course, he would never have signed for Tottenham if he didn`t realise
that we had potential - Harry is nothing if not an opportunist - but I
genuinely believe that he didn`t realise how good we were. Initially,
Harry didn`t think he was signing players who were going to be fighting
for the Champions League, he signed players to get us out of a
relegation dogfight. And because of the perceived desperation of the
situation he paid over the odds for some average players. Who is to say
what might have been had one or two of those players not been signed but
I am inclined to believe that a more astute judge might have been
quicker to appreciate the potential of his inheritance and been a little
less hasty to splash out on well-established mediocrity.
What
has been most disappointing has been Harry`s failure sell the dead wood
and capitalise on last season`s success by buying at least one decent
striker.
I have often thought that a good measure of the quality
of any manager is the esteem in which he is held by the fans of his
previous clubs. Leaving aside the other positive and negative aspects of
his management, were Harry to leave Spurs for Chelsea this summer, I
doubt there would be many fans who would thank him for his transfer
legacy.
For transfers alone I give him a generous 5/10. What do you think?
