I'm going to keep this thread going for the 2nd leg people. We got spanked in the 2nd half tonight. Taught a lesson. You all know me and I'm not one to criticise but Crouch let us down. Moddle was almost invisible & Gomes was at fault for 4th goal. OK, lol, that's out me system & the positive is Cap'tan Daws was superb. I still believe. So far this season it has been a wonderfull roller coaster ride and we still have to play Real at The Lane. Mourinio will park his bus and we have to find an almost impossible way through it.

    TO DARE IS TO DO.

To dare is to do and we have to believe that people. We will be short of God knows how many players but 'arry must send out the best team possible to attack them and take the game to them.

Emmanuel Adebayor scored twice as 10-man Tottenham were overpowered by Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

Adebayor out-jumped Jermaine Jenas to head Real in front after four minutes.

Peter Crouch was sent off after 14 minutes when he was booked for a second time before Adebayor looped a header over Heurelho Gomes to double the lead.

Angel di Maria rifled a stunning third goal from the edge of the area and Cristiano Ronaldo volleyed a fourth.

Prior to the game Harry Redknapp had talked about Tottenham's Champions League "dream", but as the much-anticipated clash got under way at the imposing Bernabeu Stadium the Spurs boss was quickly caught up in a nightmare.

The Premier League outfit had been dealt a blow minutes before kick-off when Aaron Lennon was taken ill with a sore throat and was replaced by Jenas.

And Jenas was to have an unwanted hand in the opening goal, when Manchester City loanee Adebayor rose above the midfielder on the penalty spot and powered a header past Gomes and through the legs of Luka Modric on the line to put the home side ahead.

Tottenham, previously so effervescent in Europe, looked nervous, perhaps overawed by the sense of occasion at the intimidating home of the Spanish giants or possibly overcome by their early setbacks.

Former England manager Graham Taylor said on BBC Radio 5 live: "From the word go Tottenham looked unsettled. Whether it was the loss of Lennon or the occasion, they needed to do a lot more to make an impression on this game."

Real boss Jose Mourinho had seen his 150-match nine-year unbeaten home league record come to an end on Saturday with a 1-0 loss against Sporting Gijon but his team showed no hangover as they moved ruthlessly through the gears.

With Spurs looking ragged, their chance of getting back into the first leg received a near fatal blow when Crouch was sent off.

Having already been shown a yellow card for a late challenge on Sergio Ramos, Crouch was booked for a second time for an almost identical slide tackle on Marcelo and the striker, who has scored seven goals in nine Champions League games this season, was given his marching orders by German referee Felix Brych.

Tottenham had finished top of their Champions League group, which included holders Inter Milan, and then knocked out AC Milan without conceding a goal over two legs in the last-16, but signs of that confident side were few and far between as Real launched wave after wave of attacks.

Tottenham's first real opportunity came when a run down the left wing by Gareth Bale forced Xabi Alonso to slide the ball out of play.

Bale took a throw long and found Rafael van der Vaart in the box with his back to goal but the Dutchman was crowded out before he could get his shot away.

Minutes later Bale created Spurs' best opportunity of the night with a burst of pace as he darted past Ramos and into the box but the Welshman fired into the side netting.

Just as Tottenham seemed to find some rhythm, Real almost doubled their lead as Marcelo's deep cross was headed back across goal by Ramos but bounced millimetres over the head of Adebayor on the back post.

Bale, looking increasingly threatening, again hurtled down the left and drew a challenge from Pepe, who hacked down Spurs' danger man and received a yellow card which means he will be suspended for the second leg at White Hart Lane.

Real had a strong claim for a penalty turned down when Michael Dawson appeared to handle in the box as he charged down Angel di Maria's volley.

When the whistle blew for half-time, Redknapp would have been buoyed by the way his players had worked their way back into the game.

But their brave resistance was not to last, as the second half was turned into a Real Madrid attacking master class, with the Spanish side notching up 18 attempts on target over the course of the game.

It was former Arsenal man Adebayor who scored his second of the game to give Real a cushion, making it 10 goals in 13 games against Tottenham for the Togalese striker, who met Marcelo's cross when unmarked in the box and looped his header over Gomes.

Real continued to surge forward, with former Manchester United forward Ronaldo, the world's most expensive footballer, pulling the strings.

It was Argentina forward Di Maria who scored the third goal when he stepped inside onto his left foot on the edge of the area and rifled an unstoppable effort into the top corner.

The substitutions as the game went on illustrated the gulf between the two sides with Mourinho able to throw Brazil star Kaka and Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain into the fray.

And Ronaldo finally got the goal his effort deserved when he volleyed Kaka's cross into the corner from a tight angle to all but end Tottenham's Champions League adventure.

Right, time to blow the cobwebs off this thread and get it going again. We may as well throw caution to the wind and go for it. May as well lose 0-3 than win 1-0. An early goal or 2 and it's game on. I think Mourhino will look to play on the counter but if we score early he will alter and "park the bus". Anyway, To Dare Is To Do and To Dream Is To Believe. COYS . . . ..

Changing my team slightly from the one I posted after Tuesdays game . . .

    Gomes
    Kaboul Dawson Gallas
    Sandro
    Bale Modric Lennon
    VDV
    Pavy Defoe

Tighter at the back with just the 3 playing, that I've gone for, now that Kaboul is fit and VDV for Thudd to allow, basically, 3 forwards . . . . . . .

Tottenham's Aaron Lennon should be fit for the Champions League quarter-final, second leg against Real Madrid.

The England winger withdrew from the first match at the Bernebeu at the last minute because of illness.

Striker Peter Crouch is suspended after receiving a red card early on in the first leg, which Tottenham lost 4-0.

Tom Huddlestone and Younes Kaboul are likely to feature after returning from injury in the Premier League win over Stoke.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp confirmed that Lennon is set to finally face Real.

"Aaron wasn't well again on Friday and not well enough to play against Stoke," he said.

"He did some work on Friday with the fitness coach and then joined in with a little game but didn't feel well enough.

"I think he will be fit enough to play on Wednesday.

"The crowd already know that we will give it a hell of a go."

Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon should be fit for the Champions League quarter-final, second leg against Real Madrid.

Lennon withdrew from the first leg at the last minute because of illness but trained on Tuesday, although Spurs will be without the suspended Peter Crouch.

Real lead 4-0 and have striker Karim Benzema back in their 21-man squad following a hamstring injury.

Centre-back Pepe is suspended, while Lassana Diarra (hip), Pedro Leon (knee) and Fernando Gago (groin) are out.

The Spanish side romped to victory at the Bernabeu last Tuesday, with Crouch's dismissal for two bookings proving costly for Spurs.

Lennon's return should help their cause for a game in which manager Harry Redknapp insists his side will try to engineer an unlikely comeback.

"Aaron wasn't well again on Friday and not well enough to play against Stoke [last Saturday]," he said.

"He did some work on Friday with the fitness coach and then joined in with a little game but didn't feel well enough.

"I think he will be fit enough to play on Wednesday. The crowd already know that we will give it a hell of a go."

Tottenham midfielder Tom Huddlestone and central defender Younes Kaboul are also likely to play after returning from injury in the win over Stoke.

Steven Pienaar also trained with the squad on Tuesday and could be set for a return from the groin injury which has troubled him recently.

Neither Vedran Corluka (ankle) nor Niko Kranjcar (foot) took part in the session, though, and both are doubtful for the return match at White Hart Lane.

Post by Guest Wed Apr 13 2011, 19:23

This is the spirit 'arry. Even Lil Luka is talking of the future Let's all believe . . . . . .

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has said his team can pull off a "miracle" Champions League comeback against Real Madrid at White Hart Lane on Wednesday.

Spurs go into the quarter-final second leg trailing 4-0 from the first match.

"We know it would take a miracle but miracles can happen," said Redknapp. "If we play very well you never know."

No side has ever recovered from a 4-0 first-leg defeat to progress in the competition but Redknapp joked he would settle for a penalty shoot-out.

"I'd take penalties, we have been practising," he said.

Spurs have already produced some thrilling fightbacks in an entertaining debut season in the Champions League.

They rallied from 3-0 down in the qualifying round against Young Boys to make the group stage.

Then, faced with a 4-0 half-time deficit to Inter Milan at the San Siro, Gareth Bale led the fight-back with a memorable hat-trick before they eventually lost 4-3.

But despite needing to score four unanswered goals to take the quarter-final tie into extra-time, Redknapp said it would be dangerous for Spurs to adopt a gung-ho approach.
"Everyone says we have to attack them but you are playing against world-class players, so you don't want to keep bombing everyone forward and getting ripped open on the counter-attack," he said.

"So long as we play well and give it everything we have I can't ask for anything more.

"We have to see if we can win the game and see how the game develops."

Real coach Jose Mourinho agreed with Redknapp that the tie is not yet over and vowed to select a strong side.

"We have to respect Tottenham and we have to respect football, because football sometimes can betray you," said the former Chelsea and Inter Milan boss.

"That is why we are coming here to play seriously. We know the mentality of English stadiums, supporters and teams. They will try everything.

"I put myself in Harry's position. If we lost 4-0 here and were going to Madrid I wouldn't throw the towel in. I would do everything I could to try to bring about a miracle.

"I don't think five goals would be enough for Tottenham to beat us because we are coming here to score goals.

"I will pick the best team, to get the best result possible. We have a job to finish."

Meanwhile, Spurs midfielder Luka Modric said the team would stay together even if they are knocked out on Wednesday night and then failed to qulaify for the Champions League next season.

Reports have linked Modric and Bale with big-money transfers at the end of the season.

"I don't think we are going to break up, the players have long contracts and we are really enjoying playing here," said Modric.

"We can learn a lot from this season in the Champions League. There is a bright future for us to become one of the best teams if we stay together for a long time."

Still in the game but really could have done with a goal by now. Maybe just one of the penelty shouts was a good shout but thats the way it goes sometimes. Thudd was awful at first but is slowly starting to control the game. Moddle and Pavy look lively. VDV needs to get involved more. Maybe it's time for him to make way for JermainMan ? Bale & Lennon need to keep running at the Real defence. Stll believing here. COYS . . . .
